What a Friday Evening in Nairobi.
As you, all know Nairobi is a hive of activities. Today I had a terrific encounter with the city and I felt I should share with you especially the young professionals. Let me cut to the chase, Nairobi’s phone pickpockets have redesigned their business operations and are exploring new markets with new target consumers and young professionals are the target consumers. Today I left town earlier than usual and took a Matatu to my home, as it was my groove. The journey seemed quite long and frustratingly tedious mainly because my Redmi note 10 battery was dead.
As I was approaching my stop, two men who had bloodshot eyes get to the bus. Instead of looking for an empty seat, they look around for a potential “customer”. Usually, according to market segmentation the young professionals aged between 18 to 30 years are the major consumers of expensive smart phones. I perfectly fell in that category since I was young, officially dressed with a tie on, on a Friday hence I was the ideal client. One of them came and sat next to me while the other sat just behind me. The person seated next to me spotted my phone’s contour from my left pocket and slowly but carefully pulled my phone out of my pocket without me noticing. A skillful and experienced act I might say. Then at a set of time the duo stood up and made their way to the door so that they can alight. I am an eye for detail person... I asked myself questions like… Is that the usual? ... Why does it not seem right I mean two people get in and almost immediately want to get out…?
This prompted me to check if I had all my belongings… when I checked my pockets I didn’t feel my phone.. You all know the feeling right? I immediately shouted, “Stop! Stop! them my phone is missing and they were seated next to me”. I threatened to call my phone to prove my allegations… though I knew the battery was dead… When the two thugs heard that... they threw the phone down and pretended I had mistakenly dropped it… The passengers were angered by the duo and threatened to rough them up but I do not support mob justice so I alighted the bus making a vigil prayer. Be careful this can happen to anyone.
