What is Happiness? Various thoughts .....

  • An emotional state of well being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. Wikipedia

(Jayaram V) - If you want to increase your happiness, you need to know what happiness is. Ask your friends what happiness means and they will likely find it difficult to give a straight answer. The word “Happiness’ said to have originated in the 14th century from the root word “Hap” meaning chance, fortune, or luck. Etymologically, its opposite is hapless, meaning misfortune or not having luck. Happiness may be difficult to define, but we experience it generally as a positive state of mind or as positive emotions in the form of being happy, contended, satisfied, curious, enthusiastic, excited, elated, interested, hopeful, joyous, friendly, romantic, thrilled, pleased, appreciated, accepted, proud or successful.

It is an agreed fact that all the creatures want happiness and are afraid of pain and grief. The question, however, is 'what is real happiness?' What really is called happiness? The desire for happiness has no meaning without understanding the real nature of happiness. Generally, ordinary beings consider sensual pleasures as happiness and their attempts are also directed towards these. The search for happiness means search for pleasures of the senses. The question 'what is happiness' does not arise in their hearts, because in their hearts they treat life full of sensory joys as a happy life. Quote Jain World.com

  • There are senses of your body enjoy momentary pleasures like
  • Eyes sees pleasant sceneries and you liked it and sitting and watching it
  • Ears are enjoying good music and your body tune to the same
  • Mouth – you are tasting a great your favorite food – pleasure
  • Touching – Your body enjoys the warm hug of your mom – feel happy
  • Smell – Walking through the garden and enjoying the pleasant smell

Are they called Happiness or the momentary Pleasures – yes you are right these are all short and quick stint of Pleasures for the moment? You may require this again and again and are not permanent – it is that moment and moves on, so what is happiness?

Happiness and Mindn - People work hard daily, struggle to survive in their profession, it is driving madness to delivery, most somehow want to exist, and however no one is happy. The work happiness is like “Greek” to people, as we say around here. However worst of all is that they know this, but amid so much bitterness, it seems they do not loose the hope of achieving happiness one day without knowing how or in what way. (Ref The Great Rebellion-Samael Aun Weor)

People (age is not a matter) want to live and are afraid of dying result in good business for Hospitals and Doctors – Why even God Men/Women – Religious places. If you could really evaluate some of these organizations are very powerful (TOP 10) in influence, power, Finance and Make it happen but still no happiness. Question here is what they want is to survive in the midst of their misfortune, and that is all.   There are plenty of good, bad, ugly moments and what is happiness not clear? Three are pleasant and enjoyable moments, but this is not happiness. People confuse pleasure with happiness. Parties, bar hopping, drinking sprees and orgies and brutish pleasures, but they are not happiness. There are, get-togethers without over-indulgence, vulgar behavior and the abuse of alcohol but this is not happiness either.

You love to Dance – Many love to Dance for Music, Many are in Love one time or other in life, - Do you feel happy when you dance with one you love? It is also not happiness, many doesn’t like dance, and older ones are not even attracted to these pleasures and illusions.

So in such a rate, Party, Love, Money nothings is happiness but you may be thinking otherwise. We spend our lifetime looking for happiness everywhere and die without ever having found it. Few expect luck; golden dream and look forever where and finally die without having found it. But the fact is that this is not bringing them happiness for which they yearn so much.

Let us see the walk of life – when young you look for perfect woman/man, a Prince/Princess not someone in reality, the reality hits – children, financial demand, problems of growing, etc. The mountings expenses come in with to bring up children, right education, and medical are, modern facilities (cloth, cosmetics). Naturally one face the world for his needs and states fulfilling others need becomes his desire but not happiness. Finally children gets married and leaves so it is cruel, many are filled with money and full of problems, involved in lawsuits, no good health, not happy – many time they are so unfortunate that beggar.

Life is so fast and all passes – things, people, ideas, etc. money – no money till passes away, do we experience genuine happiness? Many like to escape through alcohol, drugs, god man, religious activities, clubs, games all are sort of addiction doesn’t change life and bring in happiness.

As one thoughts say you can achi8eve by seeing yourself as You push away the EGO (Edging God Out- Remember hearing in one of the lecture’s)) Me, I and discover the causes of suffering. When one discovers the real cause of misery and bitterness and true something can be done. Manage to eliminate Me, Myself, and I of drinking sprees, Voices, attachments and so much heartfelt sorrow in us. Can we eliminate? Yes what we arrive beyond body, beyond attachments, beyond mind, that which is truly beyond our comprehension and is called happiness.

Our Mind (Conscious) remains trapped within senses and leads to Ego, attachments, Me, Myself, I and block the way to know the genuine happiness.

The Vedanta way of to Peace and Happiness(Ref Swami Adiswarandaa)

Vedanta is the wisdom of the Vedic ages, thousands of years it has inspired people to find solutions to the problems of life and thus reach the highest fulfillment. Vedanta way is decisive and its practices are based upon science and reason. However this philosophy was kept carefully guarded by saints and ascetics living in forests and mountains, never made public and termed as Guru Shisha Parampara as they thought the teachings would be diluted and misunderstood by the masses, who were prone to believe not in truth but in myths and miracles.

Here it is the matter of spirituality and religion approach filled with doubtful myths and loving legends.   The average person regards scriptures as infallible, forgetting that the scriptures are in fact remembered words and experience written down by human beings.

Swami Vivekananda was the first to bring the teachings of Vedanta from the forest to the general public. He thought that because of the developments of science the time had come to deliver the message of Vedanta to all. Swami felt that the teachings of Vedanta are worth nothings if they are not solving problem, unless they enrich our lives and lead us to peace and happiness.

Vedanta reminds us

  • That the course of life is mysterious
  • Plagued by ceaseless changes and uncertainties
  • Pain, suffering, illness, old age and death are harsh realities
  • Realities cant be ignored or avoided
  • Problems and solutions go together (one cant exist without other)
  • Nature presents a problem, it also points towards solution
  • Suggested solutions not deal with Occult or Miraculous or imaginations
  • Believes every problem has a solution
  • Human soul is not a prisoner of karma or sin

As per Vedanta our happiness depends upon peace of mind, peace of mind on self-control, and self-control on awareness of our true self.

Bhagavad Gita Updesh

  • What is yours today, belonged to someone else yesterday, and will belong to someone else the day after tomorrow. You are mistakenly enjoying the thought that is yours. It is the false happiness that is the cause of your sorrows.
  • Change is the law of the Universe. What you think as death is indeed life. In one instance you can be a millionaire, and in the other instance you can be stepped to poverty.
  • Yours and mine, big and small erase these ideas from your mind. Then everything is yours and you belong to everyone. This body is not yours, neither are you of the body. The body is made of fire, water, air, earth and ether, and will disappear into these elements. But the soul is permanent – so who are you?

Guru Prabhupada states in his Bhagavad Gita 6.21-27

Now, every one of us is searching after happiness, but we do not know what is real happiness. The real happiness is, hint of real happiness, what is real happiness, that is being described by Lord Sri Krishna to Arjuna. What is the real happiness? Happiness we feel through our senses. Because material, dead stone, has no sense, therefore dead stone cannot feel happiness or distress. Now, this consciousness, the developed consciousness, feels happiness and distress more than undeveloped consciousness.

Just like the tress, the tress, they have got also consciousness, but it is not developed consciousness. Therefore the tress is standing on the road or anywhere, but they have no sense of feeling the miseries. Now, suppose a human being is asked to stand like the tree, at least for three days. Oh, it will be impossible for him because he cannot tolerate such kind of miseries. So therefore conclusion is that every living entity feels the pleasure and happiness according to the developed consciousness of his being. Similarly, the happiness, which we are feeling now in the material mixture that is not real happiness. That is not real happiness. If you ask the tree, are you feeling happy? The tree will say, Yes, I am feeling happy standing here the whole year, and the wind and snowfall I am enjoying very much. “Oh, You See? So that sort of happiness the tree may enjoy, but you are human being. You will say, “oh, this is the standard of his enjoyment. So the standard of feeling happiness and miseries are also different grades.

The highest standard of happiness is described here,

sukham ātyantikaṁ yat tad buddhi-grāhyam atīndriyam (Bg. 6.21) Buddhi (Intelligence) grahyam atindriyam . One has to be intelligent, if you want to enjoy life, just like animals, they are not intelligent (no Buddhi) enough. Therefore they can’t enjoy life as a human being can.   Atindriyam, just like an example of dead man, the senses, the hands, the nose, the sense organs and everything is there, but now he cannot enjoy. The dead body cannot enjoy. Why? This requires intelligence? That means that the enjoying energy, the spiritual spark, that has gone away. There is no power to enjoy, further to understand that the actual body is not enjoying, but that little spark, spiritual spark, that was enjoying, not this body. The spiritual spark has got the potency of enjoyment, but that is not being manifested on account of being covered by this material tabernacle, and therefore this enjoyment is not perfect.   So the sprit may have enjoying senses also, otherwise how it can enjoy? Without spiritual spark having the senses, not impersonal there are personal, actually a person itself.

Ananda means pleasure not endless, because spirit is is eternal and the supreme Lord is eternal, therefore reciprocation of their loving exchanges are eternal. One who is intelligent understands what is real happiness. Yaṁlabdhvā cāparaṁ lābhaṁ manyate nādhikaṁ tataḥ. This real happiness... By Krisna consciousness, we shall gradually develop our intelligence; naturally enjoy the spiritual happiness, so proportionately we give up the taste of this material happiness.

The Three kind of HappinessPart 86 of the Bhagavad Gita for Awakening

Krishna now takes up the subject, for people differ greatly in the “pursuit of happiness” owing to the predominance of one of the three gunas

  • Sattwic Happiness – the happiness, born from the tranquility of one’s own mind, is declared to be sattwic. (18.37)
  • Rajastic Happiness – Bible says “ Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them” (Ecclesiastes 12:1)
  • Tamasic Happiness – both in the beginning and afterwards deludes the self, arising from sleep, indolence, and negligence, is declared to be tamasic (18.39) – arising out of spiritual sleep (nitra) laziness (alasya) and negligence and confusion (pramada)

Religion and Happiness

As V Jayaram states in his article - Religions are not meant to take away your happiness, but to enhance it. They point to perfect state of existence characterized by pure happiness in which there is no place for suffering. It is projecting ideal life, which is conducive to the highest good, may emphasize the need of an austere and disciplined life to deal with our vulnerabilities and imperfections. All religion states that the heavenly life is actually a reelection of our longing for eternal happiness. The essential purpose of any religion is to alleviate human suffering and suggest meaningful human conduct so that we may live our lives responsibly and secure maximum peace and happiness for others and ourselves.

Hinduism the essential nature of God is pure bliss (Ananda) that is said to be billions of times greater than the best of human happiness and the essential nature is also described as truth, consciousness and bliss.

Buddhism is not speak about happiness but resolving the problem of suffering to attain the same goal as in yoga, which is freedom from reaction.

What is Happiness – Charles Camosy (May 27-2011)

How most Christian, thinker through history have understood the Christian moral life. St Augustine assumes in his main discussions of morality that the starting point for such reflections is how to life a happy life, and explains why the love of God and neighbor that Christ commands in all four gospels is the true path to happiness. St Thomas Aquinas follows Aristottle in beginning his most famous discussion of morality with treatise of happiness, and concludes with Augustine that God alone can fulfill the restlessness and longing that marks of all human persons (including Moral Theology 25-26).

To be happy – as contrasted with feeling happy – is always to be happy is virtue of something or other, something done or suffered, and something acquired or achieved. When translators have supplied “happiness” as the English translation of eudaimonia or beatitude, they have in mind that type of happiness, which supervenes upon and is made intelligible by the achievement or a completed and perfected life of worthwhile activity, the achievement of the human end.

For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, for each tree is known by its own fruit. For Figs are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor are grapes picked from bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. “Why do you call me “Lord, Lord, and not do what I tell you” everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like….

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Sprit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So Glorify God in your body.

The Secret of the Happy Mans Happiness

Bible Studies (Words of Life) Series 14 (www.wordoflife.co.uk/bible)

In verses 1 and 2 it is a four fold secret

1 Repentance – this is implied in verse 1 by the three words “not” “or” “or” all have sinned (Romans 3:23) but the happy man has repented of his sin, Repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change of action (Isaiah 55:7). So it must be complete – a turning from the counsel of the wicked, from the way of sinners and from sitting with the mockers. (Notice, before we leave verse 1, three names for the unhappy man: also, the subtle progression of sin- “Walking – standing – sitting).

2. Faith - this is indicated in verse 2. This man is now happy because he has turned from Verse 1 to verse 2; from sin to God, to Christ, to the will, the word and they way of the Lord. He is now a man of faith, but he is also a man of.

3. Obedience – “His delight is in the law of the Lord” therefore he is a man of obedience, and faith plus obedience brings true happiness.

Trust and obey,

For there’s no other way,

To be happy in Jesus

But to trust and obey

4. Communion – Verse 2 tells us that this man is made and kept happy because he meditates day and night in the Word of God. This speaks of true fellowship of God – which is the fourth and final secret of true happiness.

So anyone who is seeking true happiness, here are the steps Repentance, Faith, Obedience and Communion

The way to achieve Happiness (Abdurrahman Demashqeyyah)

This author states that his reflections are based on understanding of Islam. It is the nature of every person to seek happiness. Some people strive to seek material happiness in this world away from religion, thinking that this is the true happiness. But this kind of happiness will be succeeded by pain and sorrow at the Day of Judgment, and its people will know that their striving led them only to misery and not happiness.

While others know that the true way to happiness is to obey God and follow His religion. For them the pleasures and riches of the world are of little consequence. When this happiness penetrates and fills the heart of the believer he does in fact live in this world as if he were in Paradise. Those are the people who find true happiness in this world.

He has mentioned as God has said “ whoever does right, whether male or female, and is a believer, we will make him live a good life, and we will award .them their reward for the best of what they used to do. (Quran 16.97).

To reach true happiness, we need to know what is he purpose of our life, how to reach success in the hereafter, and to fulfill the requirements of reaching this success by following the commands of God and His true religion.

Seven Tools for Conquering Happiness  (Published by Hinduism Today Q3-2003)

  1. Refine your consciousness and build self-control through education and cultured activities.
  2. Clear the subconscious of negative memories, reactions and grudges through affirmation, self-reflection and sadhana.
  3. Fill yourself with gratitude for life and for all that you have.
  4. Know that happiness and unhappiness are states of mind. They are not the real you. You are the pure awareness that experiences a state of mind; you are not the state of mind itself.
  5. Learn to change your state of mind in meditation, turning awareness within to your spiritual nature, the radiance within you. Direct awareness through controlled breathing.
  6. Tune into your innate happiness through religious devotion.

The Surprising Truth about Happiness (Jamesclear.com)

Our Psychological immune systems promote our brain’s ability to deliver appositive outlook and happiness from an inescapable situation.

Gilbert – Psychologist at Harvard University (his Book Stumbling on Happiness) discusses the many ways in which we miscalculate how situations will make us happy or sad, and reveals some counterintuitive insights about what actually does make us happy.

“Psychological immune systems promote our brain’s ability to deliver a positive outlook and happiness from an inescapable situation.

What researchers find is that

  • When people actually suffer a traumatic event like living through an earthquake their happiness levels are nearly identical six months after the event as they were the day before the event.
  • Happiness levels of paraplegics and lottery winners are essentially the same within a year after the event occurred.
  • See that one faced earthquake and another faced lottery but both are equally happy after some period.

There are few takeaways

  • First, we have a tendency to focus on the thing that changes and forget about the things that don’t change.
    • Thinking about lottery money and it will bring in, forget about 99% of life and how it will remain!
    • Feel grumpy if we don’t have enough sleep, still wait in rush hour traffic
    • We still don’t workout if we want to stay in shape
    • Still hurt when we lose a loved one
    • Feel nice and relax on watching the sunset
    • We imagine the change but forget the things that stay the same
  • Second, a challenge is an impediment to a particular thing, not to you as a person
    • Overestimate the negative event will harm our lives
    • Also overvalue positive events will help
    • Focus on thing that occurs but forget all of the other experiences
      • Writing thank you notes
      • Watching good games
      • Reading a good book
      • Eating a tasty meal
    • All are possible with any event happens (loosing a leg?)

Currently reading The Secret of Happiness By SirShree – wow an amazing book and don’t miss it if you require to know more about HAPPINESS>>>

Few of the lines

Everyone Desires Happiness, Happiness is our true Nature, But in our lives happiness is temporary, gets entangled in illusory happiness and states seven level of happiness (1) Artificial Happiness (2) Second Hand Happiness (3) Stimulation Happiness (4) Formula Happiness (5) Happiness through service (6) Divine Happiness (7) Eternal Happiness.

As we discussed before there are two parts of important factor a being Mind (Manas) and b being Intelligence (Buddhi) – the Mind works through your senses (Listening, Tasting, Seeing, Sensing and Tasting- SSTTL) and dominate all over your need. The intelligence is the silent observer and witnesses all the happenings around.

Everything in life is related to beliefs and the way you have been brought up to see those beliefs, fears, sorrows, joys, success, failures, life and deaths.   These beliefs in the society are based on various conveniences and comfort of those societies.   Mind (Manas) is influenced with all these beliefs based on circumstances and create thoughts to judge, compare, evaluate, split (black and white – Good & Bad) and again again such creation ends in pressure, stress.

Hi Bala, Good Collection from different angles & from different greatest personalities. I just want to put my thought. When one wants Nothing, He is Happy. So the WANTS should go to Zero for him to be happy for ever. What ever you get from this world to fulfill wants are all not Permanent. Some may give short term happiness & some may be for little long & will definitely end one or the other day. It makes you to think that it is under your control, but definitely it is not. So to be happy for ever, you need to catch hold of something which is permanent (I mean, which was there before we coming to this world & will be there even after our death). You can call it as your SOUL or GOD or what ever term you want. Only that can liberate you from this world of UNHAPPINESS & takes you to the world of HAPPINESS. Regards Shashank Mathur
