What if I dont know the music... Do I still dance?

It is Sunday 7 Feb 2021

Weather Prediction - A Chilly summers day in Melbourne ( 40% chance of rain)

My temperament - I had snoozed on the alarm for 45 mins (sorry honey!) . Now I am almost running late & grumpy (coz I didnt sleep too well the previous night). Self-talk: I deserve a coffee reward for getting of bed ;)

So this morning I had planned to go to a #free (always enticing) partnership event between the City of Darebin and MAV organised at the Northcote Town hall ( a good 30 min drive from home) for a one hour concert and 30 min drive back home). 1 hour drive time for a 1 hour classical music event ( a musical genre that does not even feature in my disliked songs ( in my teen years, I would have labelled this genre as the song choice of retired folk). However as a practitioner, facilitator of uncomfortable topics and feeling quite optimistic about learning this morning, I decided to head out without waking my better half ( any logical reasoning would have most definitely talked me out of it)

So I got to the event with 5 mins to spare ( thanks to everybody that slept in) and my overpriced $2 coffee from BP (paid a whole 100% more as I could not find a 7-11 on the way). To my suprise the setting was outdoors, with some limited seating and a sound system that needed calibration every time someone switched from music to mic & the noisy tram on high street every 10 mins. The crowd was made up of curious thornbury onlookers ( joggers and the rest with fancy pastries) , Indian classical music enthusiasts (from all backgrounds) and people like me who were just plain crazy to get out of bed because they were curious.

The music was a collaboration between 3 musicians (an intracultural musical dialogue that brought together two ancient Indian classical traditions: Carnatic and Hindustani). There you go...you learnt something new alongside your truly who should have known this ( given that I am southindian). Just as well I forgive myself easily enough. Unfortunately the rain gods were not impressed as the 40% chance of rain turned into a 100% drizzle ( though not strong enough to stop the music ) but it does interfere with the tuning of the mridangam and the tabla. So out came the umbrellas and the music continued. I stayed with a smile on my face even though I could not make head or tail of the composition except for the pleasing tune and the smiling faces of the musicians. The audience slowly dwindled with every song ( started strong with about 50 and finished with about 30 giving a standing ovation) and most of us wet.

Listening to the melodious tunes, got me thinking... why am I standing here in the rain getting wet at 830 am on a Sunday listening to music that I can't make sense of? and what I can learn from this experience

I spend most of my working days talking to business leaders and employees about how to create a mentally safe workplace ( an open ended topic that raises a lot of questions around emotional safety and interpersonal issues).

I feel that leaders in any organisation are often like the musicians this morning, focussing on the task at hand ( playing soothing morning ragas smiling all along) on a sunday morning in traditional Indian cotton clothing ( without any warm jumpers/ coats that Melbourne weather demands). Hats off to them! Employees maybe are like the audience, almost all will show up ( we are all curious to find out more), some will find the environment not suitable for enjoyment ( thank the weather for that ) and most will stay the entire course as long as they know their leaders are authentic, have a smile on their faces and are determined to finish what they started.

My takeaway: A leader does not have to be the business owner, it can be anyone with a desire to impart some knowledge and joy to the community that they are part of.

So ask the leader in you, why does your audience show up? and what can you do to make them stay?

I agree with your statement about leaders. Also, your statement about the audience, especially if they are invested in the dialogue/music.

love it! I think I may have stayed in bed! But I really like your question about what will keep people listening!

Great thoughts for the week. What can I offer that will keep people standing in the rain 🌧 to listen 🤔
