What I learned from DataSec ‘24
Cyera ’s inaugural DataSec conference sent a clear message: data security is the foundation of trust in our AI-driven future. Cyera’s co-founder and CEO Yotam Segev wrote up a nice summary on his thoughts here, but I wanted to share my impressions as a member of the CISO community.
Over 500 CISOs and security leaders gathered in person or attending online charted the course of data security, several key themes emerged that deserve our attention.
The Evolution of Data Security
The conference highlighted how data security has evolved from a technical necessity to a strategic imperative. We started with fundamental questions about where traditional approaches fell short, led to a crucial realization: without modern, robust AI powered data discovery and classification, scaling security is impossible.
AI: A Double-Edged Sword
AI emerged as both an opportunity and a challenge at DataSec. While it drives innovation and efficiency, it also amplifies the responsibility to secure the data that powers it. Using AI to enhance data scanning, reduce false positives, and enable precise classification at enterprise scale.
Strategic Growth and Integration
Cyera's acquisition of Trail and launch of their Identity module marks a significant step toward unified, modern data security. By combining Identity and DLP with DSPM, they're addressing the complex challenge of securing data across all environments—static and in motion.

Key Takeaways from the Community
The conference surfaced several critical insights:
- Data security urgency is mounting, but we're just getting started
- Cross-functional collaboration accelerates security success
- Legacy tools need modernization through AI-powered solutions
- The convergence of identity and data security enables better risk management
Looking Forward
DataSec 2024 reinforced that data security in the AI era requires collective action. As organizations continue to innovate with AI, the foundation of trust will be built on secure, responsible data handling. The conference sets a promising precedent for the future of data security collaboration and innovation. I hope it will serve as the premier data security think tank we all need and want.
