What I Learned about Resumes (after Hiring 10,000 people)
Dear friends,
Throughout my career as an HR person, I have read tens of thousands of resumes.
I read all those resumes because my teammates and I hired close to 10,000 people - and when I left the corporate world to start coaching and consulting, I read even more resumes.
When I read resumes, I always feel sorry for candidates because almost resume looks alike.
It's almost impossible to tell one person from another.
I always wondered, "Why are we taught to write our resumes in such a way that our talents and spark are hidden?"
After reading this many resumes, I can tell you exactly why your resume doesn't get the results you'd like it to.
It’s because your resume is a copy, of a copy, of a copy, of a copy.
It uses jargon that doesn’t really say anything about you and why you are a fit for the job.
It looks like everyone else's resume. It simply doesn’t stand out enough.
And like I said, that's not your fault - since virtually every article and resume book tells you to write your resume in the boring, anonymous corporate resume style.
But as a result, you could be applying to dozens or hundreds of jobs and never hear back from anyone.
Luckily, as an HR person I also know exactly what you need to do to get the attention of recruiters and hiring mangers.
And I’ll be teaching this approach, which I call the Human-Voiced Resume™, in the form of a Resume Challenge that anyone can join for free in October.
