What I learnt on my Greek Holiday

What I learnt on my Greek Holiday

"You have power over your mind not outside events.

Realize this, and you will find strength."

Marcus Aurelius (Meditations)

We’ve all heard the saying, “actions speak louder than words.” And there’s a lot of truth in that. Actions reveal our true character, more so than words ever can.  Psychology tells us that there are certain situations that really bring out a person’s true colours. These are the moments where you can see who a person truly is, beyond their words and their public persona.

And according to psychology, a person’s true colours are most likely to shine through. The stress and uncertainty can often bring out the best, or worst, in people. It’s during these challenging times that our true character is put to the test. Psychology tells us that when people are under extreme stress, their usual social masks may slip, revealing their true colours. This could be anything from how they react to bad news, handle pressure, or even how they treat others when they’re at their lowest.

When you find yourself in a crisis situation with someone, pay attention. Their behaviours and reactions during this time can tell you a lot about their true personality. But remember, it’s also important to offer grace and understanding as everyone handles stress differently.

And this is one of those times.

I won’t bore everyone with the full detailed epic saga of this turn of events. But I will discuss this as a learning experience and leadership manifestation, that after processing this event on Monday 25th November 2024, became most telling.

For I had always wanted to go to Greece since the age of seventeen, but life got in the way of this wish. I watched all the mythology movies eg. Clash of the Titans, 300, Jason & the Argonauts, and Hercules to name a few.

And read all about the Greek Gods and Goddess'. And my favourite, due to bringing clarity into a situation, that others might see as sowing the seeds of contention, even if you might not like what one hears is: Greek God: Phosphorus (Ancient Greek: Φωσφόρος, romanized: Phōsphoros) is the god of the planet Venus in its appearance as the 'Morning Star'. Another Greek name for the Morning Star is "Eosphorus" (Ancient Greek: Ἑωσφόρος, romanized: Heōsphoros), which means "dawn-bringer". The term "eosphorus" is sometimes met in English.

As an adjective, the word "phosphorus" is applied in the sense of "light-bringing" (for instance, the dawn, the god Dionysus, pine torches and the day) and "torch-bearing" as an epithet of several gods and goddesses, especially of Hecate but also of Artemis/Diana and Hephaestus. Or the Hermit in the Tarot cards deck (who is seen with a lantern), that governs the zodiac Virgo sign.

Seasonally, Venus is the "light bringer" in the northern hemisphere, appearing most brightly in December (an optical illusion due to shorter days), signalling the "rebirth" of longer days as winter wanes.

I also loved ancient Greek poetry; having a 'collections' book of the best. My favourite, as its the first literature piece that I read in western civilisation, that spoke positively of the femininity of a person of colour in poetry form: If she is black, so what? by Asclepiades 5.210 (Greek Anthology)

"Didyme has captured me with her eyes, Alas! And I melt like wax before a flame when I behold her beauty. And if she’s black, so what? Coals are too, and yet when we heat them They glow like rose petals."

"Τὠφθαλμῷ Διδύμη με συνήρπασεν: ὤμοι, ἐγὼ δὲ τήκομαι, ὡς κηρὸς πὰρ πυρί, κάλλος ὁρῶν. εἰ δὲ μέλαινα, τί τοῦτο; καὶ ἄνθρακες: ἀλλ᾽ὅτε κείνους θάλψωμεν, λάμπους᾽ ὡς ῥόδεαι κάλυκες."

Scholars have pointed out that the name 'Didyme', was quite common for Egyptian women in the period, and so we can read its use here as stereotypical (i.e., conventional). But in Greek, the name 'Didyme' is primarily a female name of Greek origin that means 'Twin or Double'. In Greek mythology, Didyme was the name of a nymph, known for her beauty and grace. Also read about the place Didyma in Greece, also called Didymaion, as it was an ancient Greek sanctuary on the coast of Ionia, in the domain of the famous city of Miletus. And 'Black-white' interracial unions were nothing new in Egypt. As early as the Fourth Dynasty, we have seen, a noble of the court of Memphis had a Negro wife, whose position in the court was equal to that of Egyptian women (supra n.5).

In ancient Greek mythology, twin/double held a special significance, often representing dual aspects of life or nature. The name Didyme embodies the concept of duality and unity, signifying the bond between two individuals who are connected on a deep level.

And many years ago, when around 25 years old, my Greek shoe repairman, Michael (he loved my taste in shoes by the way) stated that I should go to Greece, and that I would find others darker then myself in skin tone, even though I never brought up the subject of racism, he wanted to allay any fears of what kind of reception I would receive.

He stated that so I would feel right at home, as I would love being in Greece for its people, culture and hospitality, plus they all speak the English language. And he passed away from a heart attack, during his retirement in Greece. But I always remembered what he said to me, and his encouragement to visit Greece. So to honour his memory I was resolved to do this trip. I wasn't going with a man, nor was I going there to find a man, but because of a Man. As the personal invite to visit the land of Greece came from Michael.

So, I made the decision to book the tickets for a holiday abroad. As this was a 42 year wait now becoming a realisation. And I was saving the money each month, all of 2024, to go on this vacation to Greece.

As an 8 Universal Year Number, 2024 is full of themes around expansion and embodying strength. This was the year to own that main character energy and not be shy about it. 2024 was a year to recalibrate, take stock, and to offer our gifts to the world. This eight vibration tests our strength, and puts us in front of trails and tribulations, so we dig deeper and connect with soul for inner guidance. Harmony comes from within. There's a need for practicality as it is an earth element.

Note: please be aware when reading that I am not a seasoned traveller! Never have I ever booked a holiday abroad! This would be the very first doing so independently.

Therefore, the decision for booking the trip in the off-season, was that my daughter is disabled. And I had seen the Youtube videos of the chaos of tourists boarding the ferries, and the crowds of tourists on the islands during the peak season. It would have been both manic, a sensory overload, stressful and anxiety prone for both of us.

I did look at off-season videos and read the blogs of travellers, who had gone in the off season to the Greek islands, and what to expect. Mostly rain, and rarely the slow ferries cancelling, only the fast ferries (a high-speed craft (HSC) which is a high speed water vessel for civilian use) cancelled in severe weather. And yes, budget cost wise a lot cheaper in price for the whole trip. However, in organising the trip it taught me, no matter how prepared you are, that there is always the unexpected.

First attempt did not go according to plan, as an all inclusive holiday booking. Got a partial refund and started again. I booked that first trip for October (the off season). So I had to plan this trip for November (still the off season) and each part organised separately: Plaza Hotel (Expedia), then flight (Easy Jet), than taxi (Athena Taxi Transfer) and then pay for the ferry ride (Saronic Ferries: Poseidon Hellas) when we arrived at the mainland port side.

My daughter said she wanted an "adventure", beach and food. I wanted food, relaxation and culture. So Aegina was ideal for both of us.

Poseidon, the Greek God would play an important role in this "adventure". My daughter, Sharlene, is the zodiac sign Pisces, and has a strong affinity for the God Poseidon. So this is another reason she was excited to go to Greece. As when my daughter was growing up, she also fell in love with the mythology, food and the culture.

"And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, and be merry.” (Holy Bible, Luke 12:19)

Table cloth of the Map of Aegina at Flisvos (fish restaurant). 'Flisvos' is a Greek word meaning “the soft sound of a small wave gently hitting the shore.”

REFLECTION ON SELF LEADERSHIP

The whole experience of the vacation, became a spiritual experience as well. Also read my discovery of the Garden of Eden on Greek Island: Aegina which highlights this journey of spirituality that came about during the holiday.

As funny enough, when at the Plaza Hotel, the youngest son, Yanis (half Greek and Swiss heritage, and it means: "God is grace, graced by God), of the hotel owner, being an avid gardener, and offered my daughter and myself some Pomegrantes that he had grown, to eat during our stay at the family run hotel. A Pomegranate symbolises now, for many women, an empowering symbol of womanhood, and seen as a journey of transformation and resilience.

As we also meet Eric, the eldest son (his name means: “forever ruler” or “always ruler.” It's an Old Norse name), who warned us of the change in weather conditions coming down from the North. I still remember their father's words "if the island of Aegina wants you to stay, it will create a storm." Little did I know of what was to come...

This is because, the holiday experience came in two halves: good and bad, ying and yang. For going out to Island was good; fantastic location, the hospitality on the Island could not be faulted, and everyone spoke English. Coming back home, bad: due to storm Bertie weather in UK, bomb device scare at Gatwick (south terminal), and on the day to travel back, we had a severe sea storm in Aegina, and the ferry boats were being cancelled, even though normally there would be limited service on a Saturday. We were effectively: stranded on the island, and no one could tell us when normalcy would return. We were both supposed to be back at work on Monday 25th November 2024.

In Numerology, the Number 25 signifies transformative growth, urging individuals to embrace change and evolve positively. This number inspires personal development and encourages letting go of limiting beliefs. As a result, those connected to Number 25 often undergo profound transformations that lead to a more fulfilling life journey.

But I have no regrets of going during this off-season trip of October/November months, and I would return again, but the earlier part of the off-season: September/October, or during April/May months coming into the peak season. And there are some things I would differently, such as booking an 'all inclusive' package holiday deal, for example: Aegina Island Holidays by Jet2 packaged holidays. But overall, I got to see Greece at its finest: surreal and sublime.

Greece at its finest: surreal and sublime, Aegina Port

As you can see in the photo below. On the left was the Marina and the Yacht club, where the Yachts, Water Taxis and Fishing boats were gently rocking from side to side. And on the open sea side, the waves were crashing into the port rocks, and rising up into the air, and the wind was from the North, cold in temperature, and coming in at 49 km/h (near gale force winds) during the whole day. This was supposed to be the day of our return to Britain. Saturday 23rd November 2024.

In Numerology, the number 23 denotes adventure with a touch of diplomacy and creativity.

Myself and my daughter just watched the waves flooding the whole pier. The worst of the weather was at high noon until 2pm in the afternoon.  And the noise from the sea was deafening, as it roared into the port. It was awesome. The photo doesn't do this event justice. I turned to my daughter and said "this is a lived experience and a once off memory to hold from your holiday here". I also said to her: "This is your adventure." She gave me a look of chagrin. She got what she had wished for, but she didn't believe it would happen. That was until now.

My leadership being autocratic in nature (I only said what needed to be said and no more, utterly direct, short and to the point), I had to get my daughter’s trust in me, that I’d get us home. Sunday was the deadline.

How was I 'Autocratic'? Mostly, to my 37 year old daughter, to keep her as calm emotionally as much as possible (because as well as being disabled with Cerebral Palsy, she also has Epilepsy, and Autism with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). And out of respect, I asked her consent to state her medical conditions). As I needed to focus and make on the spot decisions. And most of the time, other women were all taking note of my stance in the situation, looking for assurance that we would make it off the island, perhaps not in time for our flights, but definitely off the island and back on the mainland, where we would go our separate ways on our onward journeys to our respective destinations. I was the Visionary.

I behaved as resiliently in my demeanour, and acted with determination. If my daughter and myself had moved from the seated bench no-one would have taken notice of how serious the situation was. We sat on that bench for 9 hours straight. Not moving. At all. For we did have the foresight to wear Tena (usually reserved for when we go to rock concerts and we aren't sure of the facilities). Neither did we eat or drink anything for those nine hours. But I did have sweets that we ate to sustain ourselves, to keep our energy up during that time.

How was I keeping my mind sharp and entertained? Talking to the Gods, especially the God Poseidon. Singing in my head, "Message in a Bottle" by Sting (The Police). And having hope, that there was another 'Autocratic Leader' on the Athens mainland and other decision makers who liked a challenge such as this. You see, those with autocratic natures make things happen, rather than getting things done. As my daughter voiced to me, "mum, this would be an international rescue attempt". I replied "I know."

Aegina Port and Waterfront Pier

The schedule of the ferry was usually for the peak season, and would change, because in Winter the sun sets at 4pm-ish. And by 7:15pm the sky is as dark as night. So on the open sea, it would be pitch black. This was the problem, for them, the Athens Port Authority. No boat sails in dark waters. Too dangerous.

Ancient port rocks beneath the surface could tear the hull apart and sink the ferry. How did they resolve it? And quickly. When the ferry boat, turned into the port bay, it was light up like a 'Party' boat. Huge 'Fairy' lights adorned the masts, all along the top of the boat. It was the image, my daughter still retains in her head. If this was a different circumstance, this would have made a wonderful Christmas image. Those of us standing out on the pier made a collective "wow" sound. The ferry boat that it was: Poseidon Hellas.

Poseidon is the God of the sea and waters, as well as of horses and earthquakes. This is why so many temples are dedicated to him both along the coasts and inland. On fountains Poseidon is often depicted as a formidable man with a wild beard, sometimes with his companions, the Tritons, which are fish with human torsos.

And Hellas is a female given name from 65-8 BCE in Ancient Greek and it means "child of the land of light"

This name meaning for the ferry boat: Poseidon Hellas, took on a symbolic meaning, as it sailed into the Port of Aegina on Saturday 23rd November at night. Keep reading...

My daughter admitted to me, when we eventually got home, that she was scared shitless. But Sharlene, my daughter also stated "I learnt so much about humanity on this trip". I just smiled and praised her for doing this and recognising her lesson learnt.

She's had an extra day off work, due to suffering from some effects of Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). And I think she has now sworn off adventures. And myself, I was suffering with the effects of exhaustion when reaching home, and returned to work on Monday (no extra day off for me).

My first British passport travel stamps

I hadn't noticed until looking over with a sense of accomplishment, that I had made this trip to Greece, that the travel stamps had been placed on page 7 of my British passport. And on the top left of the page, is the symbol of the 'compass'. As 'Compasses' have long been associated with guidance, direction, and exploration. They are often seen as symbols of finding one’s true path in life and staying focused on it. Additionally, compasses can represent inner journeys and the search for personal growth and transformation.

This is profound, as the number 7 holds a symbolism that transcends time and cultures. Its historical and cultural significance, along with its numerological meaning and biblical references, shed light on its spiritual importance.

Throughout history, the number 7 has been revered and regarded as a special number in numerous civilizations. Ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Babylonians recognized its significance. For the Egyptians, 7 represented completeness and perfection, as they believed there were seven celestial bodies visible to the naked eye. In Greek mythology, the Pleiades constellation, consisting of seven stars, was associated with harmony and protection. The Babylonians considered the number 7 as sacred and used it in their measurements of time and space.

In numerology, the study of numbers and their spiritual significance, the number 7 is considered highly mystical and spiritual. It is often associated with introspection, inner wisdom, and a deep connection to the divine.

The number 7 is seen as a bridge between the material and spiritual realms, inviting individuals to delve into their inner selves and uncover hidden truths. It represents a journey of self-discovery and personal growth.

Also our spirit and resolve was being tested: 3 Times, 3 Days and 3 Nights. And our hotel room was number 3.

In Numerology, the historical context of 333 has been present throughout history in various forms and practices, each with its interpretation but sharing a common thread of mystical significance and power. Symbolically, 333 is often linked to equilibrium and the Trinity of mind, body, and spirit. It’s thought to symbolize guidance from ascended masters and a period of supported growth.

Even though I factored that anything going wrong in my original plan, as the time of our original flight, it was to be 9:10pm. Thereat, we still had some latitude to play with for eventualities. But we still didn't make it. Missed the flight by 15 minutes and they couldn't delay the plane.

So we roughed it at the Athens airport all night. As that was another 14 hours to wait for the next available flight on an Easy Jet plane. My daughter and I, taking it in turns to power-sleep (cat nap, forty winks etc).  There was also others who had missed their flights too, and we were all lined up in a row, in the airport, along the back wall of the check-in counters because we required new boarding passes. Thankfully, Athens airport closed its doors shut, so the warmth could stay in the terminal. And we had Greek police patrolling inside the airport, to ensure we were all safe. We had food and drink at this point too, as the Cafe was open all night.

And once the Athens Special Assistance Office within the Airport opened, they took over the management of getting us on the flight home to London, England. That would in itself be the second part to the epic event. As we would come back to England on the tail end of Storm Bertie. And the airplane Captain would have to deal with the turbulent winds when landing the plane. Let's just say, the passengers gave him a round of applause at the end, when we came to a stop to disembark the Easy Jet plane.

But my daughter kept berating herself, for not checking the weather, especially the wind and it's effect on the sea, and that we could have left the day before when the sea was a lot calmer. I told her, no pun intended, but that ship had sailed, not her fault. Nature. And we had to deal with the situation at hand.

I had one rule for Sharlene, my adult daughter: no tears, no crying and no melt-downs. And I promised that I would get her home. And for her to trust me. Which she didn't and doubted. There was a total lack of faith in me. Granted, she never has witnessed how I would handle a crisis such as this magnitude. Her reason was: because, I wasn't her dad (he is an autocratic +1 character), nor was I a man. We had that conversation on the bench in Aegina on the pier.

For as a society, it seemed, it's still assumed, that ALL men will act with competence in a crisis rather than a woman. As stated in a study report on: 'The Impact of Intersectional Racial and Gender Biases on Minority Female Leadership over Two Centuries' published by Scientific Reports (2024) "...Our findings suggest that the compound influence of racial and gender biases hinders the advancement of minority female leadership by perpetuating stereotypical behavioral schemas, leading to persistent discriminatory outcomes. We argue for the necessity of organizations to initiate a cultural transformation that fosters positive experiences for future generations of female leaders, recommending a shift in focus from improving outcomes for specific groups to creating an inclusive leadership culture." So, I had a lot to live up to and deliver, on my gender, on my competencies, and my leadership.

I met my goal: arrived back in London, England on Sunday 24th November 2024 at 3:15pm in the afternoon. And got my very first traveller's stamp in my British passport. However, we had been awake for more than 38 hours (give or take the moments of cat-naps). And no, not at any point did I lose my cool, temper or have any kind of a melt-down. I remained calm, collected, and at times humorous with those around us. This is how I am during times of pressure and crisis.

In Numerology, the number 24 gives you beauty, harmony, charisma, and the ability to gather people around, and create a vibration of togetherness. It's based on a feeling of being together in a family. It's called a queen number because it combines beauty and harmony with a high inner level of consciousness, and strength, just as required of a queen.

All this reminded me of the changes that life puts us through, the decisions we make and their consequences, as well as their impact. Past 'glories' do not make future 'victories' but they show us the present 'revelatory', that is revealing something hitherto unknown: "a revelatory experience".

I do feel changed from this Greek holiday, as I've experienced personal growth. Do I now embrace my 'Autocratic' leadership style? Yes. But, I still use my 'Transformational' leadership in my day job, in the Department of Work and Pension (DWP), belonging to the Operational Delivery profession, as a civil servant.

Do I have any regrets? No. It has made me a stronger and capable leader.

What I learnt:

  • Trust the experts. In this case the sea captains and pilots. Let the specialists do their thing.
  • There are things beyond our control, but we can still make decisions that will effect the outcome.
  • Take a Stand. Stick to it. See it through to the end.
  • Spiritually, growth comes sometimes when least expected.
