What to include in your pitch?

You have a great idea, a solid team and strong execution. You now want to take it to the next level. But you lack the funds.

Now is a good time to get investors to back you so your team can take the business to the next level- serve more customers, reach more geographies, create a better version of your product.

You want to pitch to investors- but want a handy guide to approach investors better. Here is a short guide on how to pitch to investors-

a.   Your business

You have to be able to explain your business in one simple line without the use of jargon and complicated words. Simplicity is key, you can figure out semantics later. Tell us what you do, what problem are you solving?

b.   Your story

Create a beautiful and compelling story about yourself. This is an insight into you and your team, and why are you the best person to solve the problem.

c.   Your financials

You need to share updated financials with investors, preferably on a month-on-month basis. This is a sneak-peak into your execution. A good idea would be to include financials of previous years as well as your current cap table.

d.   Your fundraise plans

You need to tell the investor how much you are looking to raise, in what timeframes. You also need to make the investor understand the utilization of the funds. What are you going to spend the money on? Also, what will your business look like in 12-18 months once you have used the funds from investors? It need not be a very detailed plan, but it is very important to show revenue growth, cost structures, and cash flow metrics.

e.   Your message

We come across many emails that come with ‘Dear Sir/Madam’. There is nothing ruder to investors than an email which is not directed towards the investor themselves. Take time out to find out who you are pitching, what position they are at, what is their mandate, and please send a personalized email to them. If you expect the investor to take time and go through the materials, you have to invest time yourself to find out the investor.

Pitching to an investor seems daunting. However, when you’ve done the majority of the work in terms of the idea, the business model, the team and the execution, you just need to find a partner in an investor who can back you up.

Siddharth S. thanks for taking up time and put up this post. What is the definition of team? Me & My wife work as co-founder in my new startup. We have outsource major activities like logistic, finance to trusted partners to keep our direct expenses to min. So, will you count them as team or you would still look at on-paper team.

In the gap between the pitch deck by first-time founders and the one which helps to raise funds, many people make money out of it.
