What is Kanban?

Kanban is a visual management system that helps teams visualize their work, manage their workflow, and improve efficiency. The word "Kanban" is Japanese and translates to "signboard" or "billboard". 

Here are some key aspects of Kanban:

  • Origin
  • Kanban originated from the Toyota Production System and was developed by industrial engineer Taiichi Ohno to improve manufacturing efficiency. 
  • Kanban boards
  • Kanban boards are used to represent work items as cards, allowing team members to track progress visually.
  • Lean mindset
  • Kanban promotes a Lean mindset of continuous improvement.
  • Basic form
  • A basic form of Kanban is using sticky notes to denote "to dos" and move them to "done" when finished.
  • Kanban rules
  • Some rules of Kanban include:

  • Never passing defective products 
  • Taking only what's needed 
  • Producing the exact quantity required 
  • Leveling production 
  • Fine-tuning production or process optimization 
  • Stabilizing and rationalizing the process
