What If Knowing Your Sickle Cell Status Could Save your Life?

What If Knowing Your Sickle Cell Status Could Save your Life?

Greetings,

Welcome to CoBA’s September Edition!

This month is special, it’s Sickle Cell Awareness Month!

We’re dedicating this issue to raising awareness about the importance of testing for sickle cell disease (SCD) and providing life-changing information that could impact millions across Africa.

Did you know?

Many people have sickle cell trait without even knowing it, as it often shows no symptoms. Yet, if both partners have the trait, there’s a 25% chance with #EACH pregnancy that their child could be born with sickle cell disease. Testing is the key to unlocking that knowledge.

Key Facts About Sickle Cell Disease in Africa

  1. Prevalence: Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for a staggering 75% of the world’s sickle cell cases, with 240,000 children born with the disease each year.
  2. Mortality Rates: Without timely diagnosis and treatment, many children with SCD don’t survive past the age of five due to complications like infections and organ damage.
  3. Genetics at Play: If both parents carry the sickle cell trait, here are the odds: 1 in 4 chance their child will be free of sickle cell disease and unable to pass it on. 1 in 2 chance the child will inherit one sickle cell gene and be a carrier. 1 in 4 chance the child will have sickle cell disease.
  4. Underdiagnosis: Limited access to healthcare means many children go undiagnosed, leading to delayed treatments and higher risks.
  5. Managing SCD: While no widespread cure exists, options like pain management, blood transfusions, and medications like hydroxyurea are improving lives. Bone marrow transplants can cure SCD but remain expensive and inaccessible for most in Africa.
  6. Public Health Initiatives: Early detection, national screening programs, and improved healthcare access are vital for tackling this disease head-on.

Success Stories:

From Uganda, 12-year-old Atim Scovia was born with sickle cell disease, but her spirit shines through despite her challenges. Between hospital stays and battling pain, Atim stays positive and hopeful.

Today, she shares an inspiring message for others living with sickle cell:

"As someone with sickle cell, I want to remind you to stay strong and listen to your body. Stay hydrated, avoid your triggers, and take your medication regularly. Don't hesitate to ask for support from friends, family, or healthcare providers when you need it. Remember, you’re not alone, and each day brings new hope. Stay positive, focus on what you can control, and take things one step at a time. We've got this!"

Africa CDC Postpones 2024 CPHIA Due to Mpox Outbreak; Rescheduling to 2025

Africa CDC has postponed the 2024 Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA), originally set for 26-29 November in Morocco, due to the severe Mpox outbreak now declared a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS) and International Concern (PHEIC). The decision, made following a meeting between H.E. Dr. Jean Kaseya and Morocco’s Health Minister, is aimed at reallocating resources to combat the outbreak. The CPHIA will be rescheduled to 2025. Africa CDC thanks Morocco for its preparation and urges all African Union Member States to remain vigilant against Mpox.
