What if love really was....

What if love really was....

What if love really was an essential ingredient in business, results and leadership?

I always used to feel that love had nothing to do with business and results.

In fact, as a female leader I felt like I would be frowned upon for showing emotion.

I thought leadership was about being tough.

 I was SO wrong.

Luckily in my early years of leadership, I realised that this toughness didn’t sit well with me.

Authority had a role, but I wanted to lead from a place of love, energy and positivity too.

I found that this blend of ingredients inspired excellence and confidence.

Love was NOT something that I talked about in the office but I was conscious to make sure that my teams felt that I cared deeply.

If I'm honest it is only very recently that I have felt able to talk publicly about love and leadership in the same sentence! Since it is Valentine’s week I thought I would share my thoughts on love and be bold!

As a coach, I have done so much reading around the power of positive emotions including gratitude, self compassion and love.

I have been bowled over by the unanimous studies that demonstrate the positive impact that these emotions have on productivity, results and wellbeing.

I have come to see that love, and its cousins gratitude and self compassion, are the bridges that take you away from fear, resentment, self doubt and worry into joy, happiness, creativity and innovation.

So what role do love, gratitude and self compassion play in my life and my business?

 A HUGE role.

1 - Self love and self compassion

“To love others you must love yourself… You can only give to others what you have yourself.”

I have always been hard on myself. I used to think that this would make me aim higher and work harder. I’ve come to see that there was a more effective and more pleasant way that starts with love.

As I loved myself more I felt more energised and creative. I was also able to give more love and to lead more effectively.

Self compassion has been hugely important for me too. I see that it is a game changer for my clients too.

What if it is ok to make a mistake and to have an off day?

What if it is ok to love myself regardless of my results?

2 - Love for my work

I have been lucky to love the businesses I have worked in. I loved working in oil and gas events. I felt like we added value and created opportunity for others.

I loved leading my teams too and seeing how I could help everyone thrive and grow.

I now truly love coaching and I wake up energised to serve my clients powerfully and to help them transform their lives, their businesses and their leadership.

I have seen that when you love your work, you do better at it and you wake up excited every day.

3 - Love and gratitude for my husband, family and friends

I have come to see that the more I love myself and allow myself to receive love then I can give more love.

Understanding the languages of love by Gary Chapman has been a game changer too. I highly recommend his book. Here is the link to the languages of love quiz.

4 - Sending love to people who are annoying me or even causing me distress!

It is easy to feel positive emotions of love and gratitude for people you get on with.

I remember sharing the difficulties I was having with someone with my coach. I was shocked when he said

“How would it feel to send love to the person you are struggling with?

I know they are causing you distress

But why don’t you have a go?

What if it helps?”

 My initial instinct was NO!

But I opened my mind to possibility and decided to experiment. The result was transformational. First I felt better. I let go of the heavy emotions that I was carrying around and much to my surprise the relationship got better!

 5 - Daily practice

Every day I practice a meditation around love. I feel love around my heart as a bright light. I then see the love and the light spread through my body then radiate out to those around me and out of my house, to my city, my country, the universe. I hold anyone who might be annoying me and I shower them with love too. It is an incredible way to start the day.

So what if consciously bringing more LOVE into your life and your work could transform your relationships your leadership and your results?

 Are you up to experiment?

I look forward to hearing how you get on.

 Sending you love and gratitude
