What makes an attractive working culture?
So, what makes a good company culture in light of our post-pandemic new norm of hybrid work and the rising pressures of automation and AI?
Now more than ever companies need to look beyond salary to attract and retain top talent within their organisation.
Today’s jobseekers, especially millennials and Gen Z, want to focus on the alignment of their own values with that of the company they work for, and this goes way beyond just salary. They look for employers with an inclusive culture that embraces diversity as well as moral, social and environmental concerns.
A staggering 98% of people, according to City of London Economic Research, say they wouldn't work for a company that didn't share their principles and values.
Highly fulfilled employees plan on staying at their organizations 3 years longer than unfulfilled employees.

First of all how do we define “company culture”?
Corporate culture refers to the values, beliefs, and behaviours that determine how a company's employees and management interact, perform, and handle business transactions. Often…culture is implied, not expressly defined, and develops organically over time from the cumulative traits of the people that the company hires.
In short, company culture is an evolving mix of identity, meaning and purpose, formulated by the intersection of every member of staff and how they are led.
It’s worth reiterating that company culture is often confused with concepts like “brand identity”, and to a degree, they work towards the same end - to “differentiate itself from its competitors and build a lasting reputation”.
But where identity focuses on brand anchors to pull staff together and identify products in a market, culture is a less tangible, but no less important.
For job seekers, company culture has become the career growth number 1 priority! especially in the remote working and post-pandemic age;
“remote workers are discovering that culture isn’t built on pizza parties and free coffee, but trust, values, and a shared excitement about the work to be done”.
What traditionally defines a “good” company culture?
Let’s have a look at how some others view it:
● WeWork, for example, determines a good company culture to be “Friendly…Challenging…Motivating…Engaging…Collaborative…Nurturing”
● This piece by Entrepreneur focuses on 10 companies famed for their good company culture, which includes examples such as “creating a dedicated team tasked with coming up with events and programs to promote community”.
● This piece by Indeed does much the same, with examples of companies who “invest…in their associates’ career development…The company sees the value of promoting from within and encourages employees to pursue opportunities that align with their goals”.
So, what is the consensus? Leadership with empathy and direction; a workplace that values feedback and continued learning; community connection and above all else the alignment between personal and company purpose and how an employer can give staff members the tools to live and work meaningfully.
To conclude when a company values their employees, it can have many positive effects including:
- Increased loyalty and employee retention
- Increased productivity
- Improved employee health
- Reduced turnover
Additionally, a strong culture can help attract top talent and improve the company’s overall reputation.
An attractive working culture is one that values open communication, collaboration, work-life balance, diversity and inclusion, employee recognition, growth opportunities, and a positive and supportive work environment. It’s about being in a workplace - in-person or remote - that shares the same values and the same goals as you.
We’ve tried to highlight, best practices that will point you in the right direction. But company culture takes time to build, and the right people to curate it, day in, day out! As your company grows, it is likely your company culture will change and evolve. So, it is important to have a clear idea of what you want your culture to be like from the start, and this will help guide your vision going forward.
