What makes a good supervisor in the Manufacturing Industry?
At Denison Consulting, we did the research to find out.
In many industries, particularly manufacturing, companies aren’t clear about what qualities employees need to become a great leader. Because of this, most employees get promoted to supervisor roles because of their individual work ethic and rely upon advice from “local mentors”.
Often, the result is a leadership style characterized by yelling, ridiculing, and micromanaging to maintain control. Research shows this hurts – not helps – performance outcomes like retention, efficiency, and safety.
At Denison, we exist to help our clients improve their performance through culture and leadership behavior. So, we want to help change leadership norms in the manufacturing industry.
Over the last year, we analyzed data from more than 15,000 leaders who completed our Denison Leadership Development 360.Through Natural Language Processing on over 3,000 comments, we discovered what makes a manufacturing leader successful:
1.) Sharing information within and across groups
2.) Creating an approachable environment
3.) Following up with action
4.) Making difficult decisions and maintaining composure under pressure
5.) Becoming a source of support to other employees
These are the behaviors crucial for any supervisor in the manufacturing industry to evolve into a highly effective leader. Our research was recently published in Industry Week by Denison team members Jay Richards, Joseph Mroz, and Jasmit Kaur. Their full article “The Top 5 Qualities of a Great Manufacturing Supervisor” contains details on their methodology and findings. You can read it here: https://lnkd.in/ehUSE2a
Denison can help you understand the leadership behaviors that drive performance in your industry and at your organization.
