What it Means to Be Twice Exceptional

What it Means to Be Twice Exceptional

One of the most common questions I receive from the neurodivergent is, "What does it mean to be twice exceptional (2e)?" So, let's unpack that box!

Twice-exceptional folks are those who are both gifted (think brainiac, creative genius, or super-talented) and have one or more disabilities (like ADHD, dyslexia, or other neurodivergent traits). It’s like being a wizard and a Muggle all at once—handling extraordinary abilities while navigating some hurdles. While the term has historically been associated with children, recognition of twice-exceptional adults is gaining momentum.

You might wonder why more adults want to slap a 2e sticker on themselves. Here’s the scoop: Having a 2e label can be like finding the instruction manual for the complex machine that is you. It helps explain why you can solve complex problems in your sleep but can’t remember where you put your keys (again). Plus, it’s a golden ticket to specialized resources and a community that gets you—no more explaining why you’re both a genius and a hot mess.

Here are some reasons you might start considering a 2e diagnosis:

1. The “Why Am I Like This?” Moment: Ever feel like a Ferrari with a flat tire? You’re high-functioning in some areas but constantly tripping over invisible obstacles. Frustrating, right?

2. Work Woes: Maybe you’re a whiz at brainstorming but can’t sit through a meeting without doodling your next invention. Or perhaps you’re great at starting projects but finishing them... not so much.

3. School Flashbacks: Remember school? The boredom because everything was too easy, or the struggle because no one understood your learning style. So confusing!

4. Mental Health Rollercoaster: Anxiety, depression, or burnout knocking on your door, often out of proportion to the circumstances? Time to check under the hood.

5. Social Shenanigans: Ever feel like everyone got the social rulebook except you? Navigating relationships when you’re 2e can feel like walking a tightrope in clown shoes.

What Should You Do If You Suspect You’re 2e?

If the 2e lightbulb just went off, here’s your game plan:

1. Self-Reflection: Take a trip down memory lane. Jot down your strengths, struggles, and those “Aha!” moments. It’s like detective work but for your brain.

2. Research: Nerd out on 2e-related info. There’s a treasure trove of books, articles, and online communities where you can find your tribe.

3. Get Evaluated: Find a pro who knows their 2e onions. A thorough evaluation can help you understand your unique blend of brilliance and quirks.

4. Join the Cool Kids: Hook up with support groups, forums, or social media communities. It’s like finding the cafeteria table where you truly belong.

5. Advocate Like a Boss: Use your newfound knowledge to get what you need, whether it’s at work, in relationships, or just navigating life. You’ve got this!

Understanding that you’re twice exceptional can be a game-changer. It’s like finding out you’re not just weird—you’re wonderfully, uniquely you. Embrace it, own it, and let your exceptional flag fly high!
