What is missing in most Resumes?

What is missing in most Resumes?

Here are 4 important things missing in most Resumes:

1. Executive summary: This should summarize your resume in 5-6 bullet points. If someone did not have the time to read your profile this should suffice. Mention your roles, skills, qualifications, achievements, domain expertise, years of experience in brief. This should match the job description you are applying for. This is why a profile gets shortlisted. It should make a reader want to read more. It is your career story in brief.

2. Evidence: Evidence to support your profile, quantify it as much as possible. Revenues, team size, cost savings, numbers are important. Your sample work or work evidence will help. This should convince the reader that you have a strong profile with the required skills.

3. Presentation: The way the information is presented, language used, all of these matters. It should be easy to read. Lesser use of graphics is important so that it does not take the focus away from your resume. A resume should not be more than 1-2 pages long.

4. Story: There should be a clear storyline in your profile, so the reader can understand what you did & why. The "why" is the story. It should generate interest. This is your career story. In most cases this will not be explicitly stated, but what the reader will understand.

3 common mistakes we make in our Resume: (I made these mistakes)

1. ATS compliant Resume: This is probably the most important reason why most resumes don't get shortlisted. Resume with images/graphics, resume made on Canva, sometimes pdf resumes are not ATS compliant. Not having the right keywords on your resume will also prevent your resume from getting shortlisted.

2. Recruiter compliant Resume: If your resume gets shortlisted by the ATS it will reach the recruiter. The recruiter will look for a summary of the resume, relevant skills clearly mentioned on the first half page. The recruiter is looking for an exact did match. Most resumes get rejected because they don't have these. Customizing your resume does help here. Please remember a recruiter will be reading hundreds of resumes everyday. The recruiter will spend time on resumes that stand out.

3. Hiring manager compliant Resume: Hiring managers look for relevant skills highlighted & backed with evidence. Just putting names of skills does not help. Achievements & accomplishments help here. Giving details of projects & experience also helps. The hiring manager will look for your story, why you moved jobs & how you have progressed in your career. If a story is missing your profile or it is not impressive wont get shortlisted. A cover letter is a great way to write your story.

What mistakes are you making in your resume?

P.S: Please dont forget to customise your resume for every job you apply. This is the simplest way to get your profile shortlisted
