What is the relationship between innovation and a competitive advantage

So what's the relationship between innovation and a competitive advantage?

Well, first up, it's important to realize that you don't necessarily need to have an innovation in order to give competitive advantage. Let me explain why. Now, imagine you are an accounting company who has 80% of its workforce offshore at a developing country.

Say for example, the Philippines. Now, if you were to compare that verse, a company, an accounting company that has a hundred percent of its staff in a highly expensive cost, expensive developed world. We are going to find straightaway that the company that is offshoring has a competitive advantage despite having no innovation whatsoever.

Now here's a competitive advantage story with an innovation. So imagine an accounting company that has managed to integrate some AI software that enables it to automate 95% of its tax returns for its clients. Now that is a huge competitive advantage in terms of reducing the amount of cost expenditure, especially if they can license that software to other smaller, non-competing accounting firms.

Now innovation does not necessarily create a competitive advantage, and the reason why is that not all innovations are created equal, and it's big reason why so many of us can make a mess of innovation and not get a competitive advantage.

A competitive advantage to innovation only comes when you can effectively solve a problem that someone is willing to pay for, and the reality is too many innovations. Don't solve a problem that people are willing to pay for. What we need to be able to do is, one, prove that it's a problem worth solving.

Two, look at making sure that someone is willing to pay for that solution and in three, effectively solve the problem.

While innovation can be a conduit to creating competitive advantage, it's not the only route, nor is it the surefire plan that's out there.
