What Skills Must You Develop to Survive?

What Skills Must You Develop to Survive?

For many years, if you did your job, you had a job for life. That was long term employment. It started disappearing about 30 years ago and is now almost gone.

When an employer moves jobs overseas, or outsources to an outside company instead of having an in-house department do the work, many jobs are lost. Newer companies seldom create an in-house department.

For example, AliBaba.com started as a very small internet company called China Yellow Pages. Early on, Jack Ma outsourced all of his web development work to US companies, so he could grow the company quickly. Alibaba.com is now one of the leading platforms for global wholesale trade.

The mentality of just needing one or two more jobs to get you to retirement isn’t going to work. What does work?

#1: Start thinking like an Entrepreneur; come up with new methods or more efficient ways of doing things. If you are able to help the department/company move forward, you become a valuable resource to your current or future employer.

#2: Always be available for new opportunities. You never know which one might be the perfect fit.

#3: Make sure you subscribe to trade publications so you can stay current with developments in your field. Webinars, online courses, and tutorials will help you to keep up in your area.

If you are going to survive the changing economy, you also need to keep changing.
