What It Takes to Change Public Opinion (It Doesn't Happen Overnight)

Public opinion can change on a dime. No matter your business or industry, many of us will face a drastic opinion change, but it is up to us to take it in stride and come out stronger and better off on the other side. However, how do you do that? When public opinion changes, it can feel like your once-loyal audience is against you and that your industry or business is now the center of negative attention. Thankfully, you can ensure that feeling is temporary.

Remember, though, public opinion does not change overnight.

Respond Accordingly and Timely

Whether your industry has taken a turn or business is under the spotlight, it is essential that you take the time to curate a proper response to your clients, audience, and followers. Getting ahead of whatever rumors, negativity, or general opinions are out there can help you gain control of your situation. While this should be a timely response, you don’t want it to be a rushed one. It could be wise to connect with professionals who understand what it takes to change public opinion and how to continue strong through this unpredictable time. Ultimately, you don’t want to be the last one talking about the situation, but you don’t want to be the bumbling first.

Keep Any Promises That You Make

This change might cause you to make promises to your teams, leaders, and clients. If change is necessary, you must create a plan to enact it. However, the plan is no good if you don’t actually go through with it. If you make promises, you have to keep them. It is best to give yourself timelines and dates of completion so you can stay accountable for what you’ve stated. The worst thing you can do during times of change is be flippant with those around you. Keeping promises will build trust and credibility, which are two things that are extremely important to changing public opinion.

Go Out of Your Way

If you want to change public opinion, it could be time to see what you can do for the public. If your business or industry is taking a hit, it could be wise to look into philanthropic ways to help your community, whether by volunteering your time, money, or resources to a good cause or providing discounts or exclusive deals to your clients. Going out of your way to support your loyal customers or give back to your community can help grow your relationship with the public. However, it is important to choose ways that are unconditional and genuine.

Be Consistent

Consistency can help grow trust, credibility, and overall representation of your brand and business. You want to be consistent on your social media platforms, website, press releases, and other public statements to ensure that you represent the same values and mission statement across the board. It will be obvious if you try to change personas or ideals during times of negativity, especially if you change right back after things clear up. It is best to stay consistent and represent yourself appropriately.

Remember Your Values and Take Control

You want to remember your values at every step of changing public opinion. Your values of integrity, customer satisfaction, resilience, and innovation will ground you during troubling times and keep you connected to your loyal audience. If you want to change public opinion, you can’t assume someone is going to do it for you. You must take control, remember your values, and take the steps necessary to bring your business and industry the light it deserves.

Now, there is no saying you must do this alone. Taking control can also mean seeking guidance from those who understand where you stand and can assist you in the right direction. No matter what, you are the leader in this change. Take the time to remember your values, strategize an improvement plan, and give back to those around you, but remember, changing public opinion does not happen overnight.
