What Are Those Beliefs That Are Holding You Back?

🐜 Don't Be The Ant!

Have you seen the video where an ant is stuck going in circles because of a simple line drawn around it?

The ant is not leaving the circle for no other reason than that it THINKS there's a barrier.

Here you can watch the full video of the ant.

It's fascinating and a bit funny, but it got me asking:

❓ How often do we do the same thing without even realizing it?

🚫 Invisible Walls

We draw these invisible lines and barriers in our minds that hold us back, telling ourselves stories about what we can't do or where we can't go.

Watching the video, you'll realize, there is absolutely nothing in the way and there are zero barriers for the the ant leaving the circle.

The limit does not exist.

Except, for one - the illusion of a barrier.

Looking at it from the outside, it's obvious to us.

But when we're in the situation it may not seem like an illusion.

🐜 I Was The Ant

I had this moment where my coach pointed out the invisible walls I put up for myself - my excuses and self-made limits.

And that changed everything.

💡 You Can't See the Label From Inside the Jar

Trying to coach yourself is like trying to tickle yourself; it just doesn't work.

With a little help, I started to see these walls weren't really there at all.

Just like the ant needed someone to show it there was no real barrier, I needed someone to show me my limits weren't real.

The only limits that truly exist are the ones we acknowledge.

Mapping Your Invisible Walls

How can you start today to identify those walls?

Here's a 5-minute exercise to get you thinking in the right direction:

  1. Identify: Think of a goal you've struggled to achieve. What "invisible wall" is holding you back? Is it fear of failure, belief you're not skilled enough, or something else?
  2. Challenge: Question the reality of this wall. Is there evidence supporting its existence, or is it a belief you've constructed?
  3. Action Plan: Write down one small step you can take to challenge or bypass this wall. It could be as simple as researching a skill, reaching out to a mentor, or dedicating 10 minutes a day towards your goal.

This exercise is a step towards recognizing and dismantling the barriers you've set for yourself, opening the door to your potential.

The first step to cut the crap and start Buying Yourself.

Coaching Question 1:

What invisible walls are you currently allowing to limit your potential, and how can you start to dismantle them today?

Coaching Question 2:

Reflecting on a time when you felt stuck, what belief or assumption was holding you back, and how can you apply that lesson to a current challenge?

Answering these questions can sometimes feel scary and at times, bring unexpected outcomes that you don't know what to do with and how to deal with them.

As your coach, I'm here to help you develop these further and take small steps towards peeling off the layers and buying yourself.
