What Truly Matters in a Child’s Life: A Story for Today’s Generation
This post is a reflection on my recent experience at my son’s first PTI in his new school. It’s about shifting the focus from grades and academics to what truly matters: a child’s happiness, mindset, and ability to thrive as a human being. In a world that often emphasizes achievements, I believe in nurturing life skills, curiosity, and emotional well-being.
Last week, I attended my son’s parent-teacher interaction (PTI), his first in his new school. Until Grade 5, he was in a different school, so this meeting felt even more significant. The teachers were ready with their papers and reports, eager to discuss his academic progress. But before we got into marks or assessments, I asked them:
“How is he in your class? Is he happy? Does he laugh often? Does he get along with his peers? Is he energetic and curious? Is he truly a kid?”
The teachers paused for a moment, surprised. But to me, these questions are far more important than his grades. Because what’s the point of excelling academically if our children aren’t thriving as human beings?
In a new school environment, these questions hold even more weight. I wanted to know if he was adjusting well, making friends, and feeling excited about learning not just about how he was doing on paper.
The Problem with "By Heart" Learning
I’ve never believed in the kind of education system that measures learning by rote. Imagine a South Indian child memorizing Hindi—a language that feels completely foreign—just to write answers they don’t understand. They’re graded not for understanding, but for regurgitating information onto paper. Is that what learning is supposed to be? For some, maybe. For me, it’s a resounding NO.
As a parent, I tell my son this: don’t let grades or peer pressure distract you. Focus on developing your skills, your mindset, and your curiosity. Grades matter, but they should never come at the cost of a vibrant, happy childhood.
Let Them Get Dirty, Explore, and Live
Childhood is about more than academics. It’s about experiences. Let your children climb mountains and feel the wind on their faces. Let them get drenched in the rain and splash in puddles. Let them play in the mud, get dirty, and laugh about it. These moments teach resilience, creativity, and a connection to the world that no classroom can replicate.
Take them to watch a sunrise, or let them stay up late to stargaze. Let them taste the sweetness of fresh fruit they picked themselves and feel the thrill of running barefoot on grass. These are the experiences that shape a child’s character and teach them the joy of living.

The Alpha Generation - A Future Beyond Screens
This generation—Generation Alpha—will grow up in a world dominated by technology. AI, automation, and digital tools will shape their lives. But in a world where screens are everywhere, it’s crucial to remind them what it means to be human.
The future won’t belong to those who memorize the most facts but to those who think critically, collaborate effectively, and connect deeply. Emotional intelligence, adaptability, and empathy will be their most valuable tools.
Sure, teach them coding if they love it, but also teach them how to disconnect, recharge, and enjoy the world beyond technology.
Dear Fellow Parents
Let’s teach our kids that their worth isn’t defined by grades or recognitions. Let's encourage them to dream, explore, fail, and try again. Let's help them build a mindset that embraces challenges and an attitude that values the richness of life.
Because in the end, it’s not the medals or report cards that define success. It’s the memories of playing in the rain, the courage to climb the highest peaks, and the joy of living fully.
So let them get dirty, laugh loudly, and live boldly. The future belongs to children who are not just prepared for the world but also deeply connected to it.
