What are Tungsten Carbide Rolls- Importance, Benefits, and Resources

The steel industry has witnessed rapid development, which has led to the need to improve steel output, increase the utilization rate and productivity of rolling mills, and reduce rolling mill shutdown times. It is here that tungsten carbide rolls come into the picture.

What is a Tungsten Carbide Roller?

The carbide roller is also known as the cemented carbide roller ring. It is a roll made of tungsten carbide and cobalt using the powder metallurgical method. Tungsten carbide rolls of ATS Techno has superior performance, stable quality, and high processing accuracy. Our carbide rolls have excellent wear resistance and high impact resistance. These rolls are commonly used for rolling the rod, threaded steel, wire rod, and seamless steel pipe, as they significantly improve the operational efficiency of the rolling mill.

High Performance of Tungsten Carbide Roller

Carbide rolls are known for their high hardness, and the hardness value varies slightly with temperature. The thermal conductivity of the cemented carbide roll is high, so the heat dissipation effect is good. The surface of the roll is exposed to high temperature only for a short time; hence, the high-temperature reaction time of the harmful impurities on the roll and in the cooling water is short. This is what makes the tungsten carbide rollers resistant to corrosion and hot and cold fatigue compared to tool steel rollers.

The performance of the tungsten carbide rollers depends on the content of the bond metal phase and the size of the tungsten carbide particles. Tungsten carbide is 70 to 94% of the total composition, and the average particle size is 1/4m of 4 to 8. If the metal bond content increases, the hardness of cemented carbide decreases, and its toughness improves.

Tungsten carbide rollers are divided into integral and composite types based on their structural form. Integral tungsten carbide rollers are widely used in high-speed wire rolling mills' pre-precision rolling and finishing stands. On the other hand, a composite cemented carbide roller is composited via tungsten carbide and other materials. The composite carbide rollers are cast directly into the roller shaft, which is applied to rolling mills with heavy loads.

Benefits of Tungsten Carbide Rolls in Steel Production

If you are looking to improve the steel production process, then our Tungsten carbide rolls are the perfect choice! In the steel production industry, the quality of rolls plays a crucial role and makes a huge difference in the effectiveness and efficiency of the process. Tungsten rolls are popular owing to their resistance to wear and tear, durability, and ability to withstand higher temperatures.

Tungsten carbide rolls offer a wide array of benefits in the steel production process. The first and foremost benefit is that they are durable and easily withstand heavy usage and high temperatures. This simply means that they last longer than other types of rolls. It frequently reduces the need for replacements, thus saving time, money, and resources.

As mentioned above, tungsten carbide rolls are resistant to wear and tear, so they can easily maintain their size and shape even after frequent usage. This results in consistent and accurate steel production. Tungsten carbide rolls are known for their ability to produce high-quality steel products with a smooth surface finish, which is quintessential for several applications.

Replacing traditional cast iron rolls and alloy steel rolls with tungsten carbide rollers has shown superior results for rolling wire and rods. The application of carbide roller rings will continue to expand in rolling machining for broader applications.
