What You Should Know About 10x Thinking

Are you ready to take your problem-solving skills to the next level? If you're tired of the same old incremental improvements and want to aim for solutions that are truly groundbreaking, then it's time to embrace the power of 10x thinking!

What is 10x thinking?

Also known as "moonshot thinking," 10x thinking is all about setting your sights on solutions that are 10 times better than what currently exists. It's about taking on impossible challenges and looking for ways to overcome them. And it's about having the courage to take risks and embrace the possibility of failure in the pursuit of truly transformative solutions. This approach is often associated with Google X, the experimental research and development unit of Google, which has been responsible for developing groundbreaking technologies such as self-driving cars and Google Glass.

10x thinking is about pushing the boundaries of what is currently possible and looking for solutions that are so transformative that they have the potential to fundamentally change the way we live and work. It's about taking on "impossible" challenges and looking for ways to overcome them.

Why is 10x thinking important?

In a constantly changing and evolving world, it's important for companies to stay ahead of the curve and continuously innovate to remain competitive. Traditional problem-solving approaches, such as incremental improvement, are important for maintaining and improving upon existing products and processes. However, they are far less effective at driving breakthrough innovation and creating fundamentally new solutions to challenges.

10x thinking, on the other hand, encourages individuals and organizations to think beyond the status quo and to consider solutions that are radically different from what currently exists. By aiming for solutions that are 10 times better than the current state of the art, you can create game-changing products and services that have the potential to disrupt entire industries.

How can you foster a culture of 10x thinking?

Creating a culture of 10x thinking within a company requires a commitment to taking on bold challenges and encouraging employees to think outside the box. Here are a few ways that you can support your organisation foster a culture of 10x thinking:

  1. Encourage risk-taking: In order to achieve 10x improvements, you must be willing to take on risks and embrace the possibility of failure. This requires a culture that encourages employees to think big and take calculated risks in pursuit of breakthrough solutions.
  2. Empower employees to think creatively: A culture of 10x thinking must encourage employees to think creatively and to challenge the status quo. This might involve providing employees with the freedom to explore new ideas and approaches, or creating dedicated time and resources for employees to pursue creative projects.
  3. Foster collaboration: 10x thinking is often the result of collaboration between individuals with diverse backgrounds and expertise. You can encourage 10x thinking by fostering a culture of collaboration and encouraging employees to work together across different functions and departments to solve challenges.
  4. Celebrate failure: In the pursuit of 10x solutions, it's inevitable that some ideas will fail. Champion a culture that celebrates failure as a learning opportunity and encourages employees to take risks and try new things.
  5. Invest in long-term thinking: 10x thinking often requires a long-term perspective and the willingness to invest in projects that may not bear fruit for years or even decades. Prioritise the values of long-term thinking and ask or provide the resources and support necessary to pursue ambitious projects.

10x thinking is a powerful approach to problem-solving and innovation that encourages individuals and organizations to think big and aim for solutions that are orders of magnitude better than the current state of the art. By fostering a culture that encourages risk-taking, creativity, collaboration, and long-term thinking, you can drive breakthrough innovation and deliver far more than mere incremental improvements. Just remember, if you're not doing it, someone else, somewhere else - is - and they will kick your butt.

Big fan of this approach, Kam Star. How would you balance it against agile and the need for speed to market (and customer feedback)?
