What about your friends?

What about your friends?

Over Christmas break, a friend of mine asked me how do you know if someone is REALLY your friend.

I told her if you call this person:

- when you're stranded in the middle of the night with no money and she gets up out of bed to get you when calling Uber was more convenient

- when you’re an emotional wreck and he tells you corny jokes to make you laugh and forget your pain,

- or when you need a favor ASAP and they drop everything to do it for you, then that person is your friend.

As I was working on releasing my membership site last night, my friend called me and said she had an allergic reaction at work.

She didn't have an EpiPen because they're on back order.

Of her emergency contacts, I was the closest.

So, what did I do?

I put on my coat, my shoes, and grabbed my keys and began to drive, like a madwoman in the streets of DC, to pick her up.

When I got there in what seemed like two seconds later, I asked her what happened.

She works in the restaurant industry, and a portion of her role is tasting food.

She's allergic to nuts.

She looked at the ingredient list to see if there were nuts in the dish. No nuts.

So, she took a bite and felt odd. There was a slow sensation of her tongue swelling.

She sat down and asked the chef what was in the dish.

The chef said they made it with almond milk.

I drove her to my house after we confirmed she didn't have to go to the hospital. I'm just glad didn’t look like a blowfish.

Altogether, this ordeal took about 3-4 hrs away from being able to launch the site.

But, guess what?

I didn't care.

That's what you do when someone you love needs help. And, I know if the situation were reversed she would do the same for me.

Luckily, I have a boss who understands that emergencies come up. And, that boss is me.

Would your boss let you handle an emergency when there’s a looming deadline for a project? Just something to think about.

There will always be work to do. I just prefer to choose people over things (that’s my two cents).

Knowing that your friend didn't become a blowfish, I can say, lovely post, Bianca J. Jackson, MBA, PMP®. Human lives are a stake from the way we've precariously built the world of work to be inhumane. Emergencies are emergencies, but it is also the truth that similar daily circumstances need to be surfaced and addressed. Thousands of times a day, someone at work is feeling ill and there are long-term life consequences depending on whether they have the leeway, while working, to support their health or have to push through no matter how much their body is signaling it needs attention. We now have the technological tools and see the destructive cost to our collective health of not prioritizing the needs of humans as part of how we conduct business. People matter. Companies have created deluded rules that don't acknowledge that every employee has life responsibilities that will take urgent precedence. We have to bring respect for humanity and the unknowable aspect of life into how workers are treated.
