What will be your legacy when you turn 80?

What will be your legacy when you turn 80?

Have you ever wondered what your legacy will be when you reach the ripe age of 80? Well, let me share a story with you that left me feeling emotional and contemplative.

My business partner and husband, Eric Gant , was chatting with his friend Brad, a fisherman, who revealed that he has to go back to fishing tuna this season because he cannot sell his boat, fishing license, or anything related to his fishing business. The heartbreaking part? Brad is 80 years old and has a family that relied on him for years to bring home the bacon, or rather, the tuna. Pun intended.

It got me thinking about how many people in the fisheries are in this same situation. With marine parks being "protected," fishing quotas are diminished, if not gone entirely, leaving many baby boomers who didn't have enough savings to retire in a bind.

So, what are you doing to prepare for the changes in the economy? Rising interest rates, inflation, and long-term wars are just some of the challenges we face. Are you in the sunrise or sunset industry?

Eric started our sustainable aquaculture business back in 1988 (and I joined in 2008), with the knowledge that the animals we specialize in take 10 years to grow. We just had our first harvest summer of 2022 (and every year we'll be harvesting as we're planting year after year.) Did you know that Japan has 300-year plans? What if we started planning annually, even quarterly, with the understanding that we are in for an infinite game?

Join us (as attendee, panelist, or sponsor) on September 8-9 for our AquaConnect Conference, connecting the global aquaculture community, where we'll discuss Leadership, Partnership, and Stewardship. This is our strategy to kickstart our Sustainable Business 5.0 Hub, where you we can create a collaborative platform not only for aquaculturists but for the food industry.

Partnership is one of the pillars of this digital decade in a fragmented industry like aquaculture. So, let's work together to create a sustainable future for all.

Cheers!

Lourdes Gant 🦋, I reckon we do our legacy intentionally or unintentionally each day. Each person we connect with, each task is part of doing just that. What it looks like at a specific time, is sometimes a surprise, sometimes a disappointment.

SO heartwarming to hear about balanced, reasonable and accountable 300 year old legacy planning. I've often talked about World Jenny's Day and The Epiphany Process having a 300 or even more year old plan and I know that now is the time to put it together so that both these become bigger than me and Jenny - so that at the end of the day it has nothing to do with her or more but embraces that bigger picture legacy. What amazing work you are doing Lourdes Gant 🦋

If ever I turn 60 I'll be happy. Don't think of your legacy only when you reach 80, bring awareness now. No one is granted 100% chance to live up to 80, 60 or even 30. Plenty of cases where humans are leaving the planet as early age

Great question to ask. I think we all think about this in different ways and at different seasons of our lives.

This poses some interesting and compelling questions Lourdes. Not just in the fisheries industry, but in all industries. It's not enough to just have a job and a retirement pension. Between the disruptions in technologies and the disruption in finance, nothing is quite as we expected when we started building for our future. There are so many things happening in tandem however, and where one thing looks like a risk, another thing is coming in that will alleviate it - maybe not for those who are already in the final chapters of their life but definitely for those who are just a few years younger. I'll be talking about this topic specifically myself next week. It's both worrisome and exciting - like everything going on today!
