What Are Your Symptoms?

What Are Your Symptoms?

As I advance in age, I try desperately to benefit from failure and hindsight

To be cliche, failure, when we encourage it to be, can be a wonderful learning opportunity

I have found this easier said than done, but still genuinely true. For me it’s been a choice

Piss and moan or get up and implement the lesson

Cliche #2. Hindsight is 20/20.

It is if you choose it to be so

So then is everything a choice?  It is for me

One of the “choices” we seem to make is this curious support of focusing our time, energy, money and attention on symptoms instead of root causes

Pick a topic

Health is easy.

Symptom - We continue to support pharmaceuticals with massive ad spend and support from  doctors who sign scripts with impunity to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes (among other common maladies)

Root Causes - You’re fat. With exceptions, you don’t move around enough and you eat like shit

Crime is easy

Symptom - Way too many people get shot and killed

Root Causes - Fatherless families produce criminals and bad guys don’t get punished. Open borders let in criminals and drugs that kill us and promote gun violence

Homelessness and drug abuse are easy

Symptoms - Our cities are in states of economic collapse, homelessness has skyrocketed and addiction is off the charts

Root Causes - We continue to elect far left radical wack jobs who push entitlement over accountability and we let criminals across our border and give them money

Education is easy

Symptoms - Our children can’t compete with other countries anymore

Root Causes - The teachers union cares more about themselves than the kids. Break up the unions and get rid of tenure. Bring reading, writing and arithmetic back into schools. And yeah, history, shop class and home economics too

It’s my contention that our collective support of focusing on symptoms has created multibillion dollar industries that are now exposed and trying everything in their power to remain in power, influence and control

Do I understand that there are exceptions and nuance here?

Of course, but we are using them as excuses to stay mired in our symptoms

As we start to address root causes (as we now are), there will be massive campaigns against the root cause proponents and possible violent confrontations (I hope not)

WHAT IS “ROOT CAUSE”?

Definition - “The fundamental reason why something happened, and is the underlying issue that prevents the problem from recurring if addressed”.

If you take the time to think about what is symptomatic in your life and then dig into the root cause, you will find that you begin to make progress with the symptom…and if you remain diligent, most of those symptoms will go away

Symptoms that I have personal experience with:

  • Fear
  • Sadness
  • Anger
  • Regret
  • Financial hardship
  • Weight problems
  • Circulation issues
  • Loneliness
  • Alcohol abuse
  • High blood pressure

Too many others to remember…

There isn’t one of these issues that I can’t fix by taking ownership of it and modifying my behavior

Is it easy?  Fuck no

Name me one really great thing in life that comes easy?

Have I fixed all of these issues?

No

Have I addressed them all with ownership and personal accountability?

Yes

Are they all either under control or much better?

Hell yes

Am I in this fight for life?

Yup

Life is hard

It’s not complicated. Don’t let anyone tell you it is

The next time someone offers you Ozempic to solve all your physical problems, tell them thanks but no thanks and go for a walk. When you get home, have a salad

You can turn any of your problems around with ownership and behavior modification

We are being misled and it’s time to say "no more"

If you think you might benefit from a sympathetic ear, please look me up

I genuinely do give a shit and I know some stuff
