What is YOUR time worth? - The SD Event Planner Issue #6

Good morning! After what seems like a very long break, the SD Event Planner Newsletter is back! I’m excited to share with you the tips and tricks of what I’ve encountered in the event planning industry and sprinkle in some stories along the way.

What is YOUR time worth?

This week, let’s talk about a topic that everyone truly has in common…TIME.

Let’s break it down:

  1. Personal time
  2. Professional time
  3. FREE time (what’s that, right?)

There are plenty of books and articles and journals and blogs out there about balancing your time, and the importance of doing so for your mental, physical and spiritual health. We know what to do, but, creating the boundaries necessary to truly balance your time is what I find to be my challenge.

Since I last wrote to you, I’ve been in a constant battle of time. Who isn’t though? We often use this as an excuse to not get to something, or do something, or focus on something. Like our personal well-being, our families, and our work. This isn’t isolated to those of us involved with producing and planning events, this is something we all face as a society.

I often say this when I’m extremely busy, “my time isn’t my own.” Who else can relate? As a society, I think we pride ourselves on being overly busy, overwhelmed, and overworked. For some reason, we’ve been convinced along the way that it shows our worth and value. It shows that we are successful.

When we are in a constant state of feeling like our time is consumed with others priorities, instead of our own, we can often become resentful, frustrated, guilty, and unhappy. None of these things are productive and have an adverse effect on our personal well-being, and those we care about.

We’ve all experienced this and bought into this along the way. But the reality is how can we sustain that pace? Sometimes, outside factors will make us slow down. Like our personal health or the health of a loved one.

So, what do we do about the ever-present, constant battle of time? I can’t write your plan or tell you what to do. It’s a balancing act of life, boundaries, and always present outside factors. There are plenty of experts who have researched and can provide advice.

What I can offer is this. I plan to take more time this summer being present in the moment. And not for one moment feel guilty about my decision to go hiking in the woods with my mom, sitting in the backyard with my puppy watching him love life, and going to a concert with a friend. I’ll always have my to-do list standing by, and will keep plugging away.

Tell me how you plan to take back your time this summer. I’d love to hear from you!

Thanks so much for reading!
