What's on my mind? Talent!

What's on my mind? Talent!

In my past two Unlocking Moves newsletters, we've talked about the opportunity to use the summer months as an opportunity to get yourself right. Whether it's your mental, physical or spiritual health, summertime is a great time for a reset! I also hope your team is also using this time wisely!

Actually, let's talk about your team...

As our companies grow and evolve, we need to be planning for the future. Members of your teams will step up, some will be outgrown, and some will need coaching, mentoring, or to be reassigned. As entrepreneurs, we can't sit back and expect talent issues to take care of themselves. As a wise man once said in a book called Who's Your Mike? A No-Bullshit Guide to the People You'll Meet on Your Entrepreneurial Journey, "the number one thing keeping entrepreneurs up at night is talent."

So let's talk about talent!

Innovative Baseball 🤝 Innovative Hiring

If you're a fan of baseball, chances are you've seen what the Savannah Bananas have been doing. It's definitely not your grandad's "ol' ball game!"

What Jesse Cole has created with Bananaball brings passion and creativity to the field, but most importantly it brings a love for the PEOPLE behind the sport. Check out what Jesse had to say about hiring as the Bananas started taking off:

I love this: "Growing and Hungry. If you say that you want to be in the same position doing the same thing in 5 years, you don't fit our core beliefs". Jesse and his team are so secure in their culture, they don't even ask for a "past resume" - but ask you where you're going in the future!

There's no one-size-fits-all solution to hiring

My team at HireBetter has done an amazing job of helping entrepreneurs of all flavors, shapes and sizes, build their "next-level" teams.

Getting the right people in the right seats is a big part of your success. It is so easy to get wrong, no matter how careful you are. Help yourself to some free resources from HireBetter to make your hiring process as smooth as possible:

Want to know a secret? ... I suck at hiring!

As the optimistic, glass-half-full kind of guy, I usually see the best in people. If I interview three COO candidates, I'll probably connect with something in each of them and want to find a position for every single one!

That's why it's important for me (and I suspect a lot of my fellow entrepreneurs share this trait!) to have someone at the table to balance me out. I've learned to leverage my gifts to sell the vision and our culture to candidates, and trust our process and the people around me to help make the right hiring decision (and leverage trusted advisors for key executive hires). Check out what my friend Kelly Knight from EOS Worldwide had to say about this topic on #UnlockingMoves!

I love doing your podcast, Kurt! You are a really great host and get the most out of your interviews and conversations (you're a maximizer!) and make everyone you meet feel comfortable and able to be open and honest.

I love the transparency on the hiring piece, it’s so refreshing to hear that you are able to connect with the positive in each candidate. I have worked with teams that became so bogged down in searching for the perfect candidate that the smallest negative would seem disqualifying. It was often my role to synthesize all of the inputs and then talk through the whole candidate.
