Peer Reviewed Research

Huacachino, A. A., et al. (2025). "Specific and potent inhibition of steroid hormone pre-receptor regulator AKR1C2 by perfluorooctanoic acid: Implications for androgen metabolism." Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology 246 C7 - 106641.

Here we report PFOA inhibition of AKR family 1 member C2 (AKR1C2), leading to dysregulation of androgen action. Spectrofluorimetric inhibitor screens identified PFOA as a competitive and tight binding inhibitor of AKR1C2, whose role is to inactivate 5α-dihydrotestosterone (5α-DHT). Further site directed mutagenesis studies along with molecular docking simulations revealed the importance of residue Valine 54 in mediating AKR1C2 inhibitor specificity. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Hyks, J., et al. (2025). "Leaching of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash intended for utilization as secondary aggregates in road subbase." Journal of Hazardous Materials 483 C7 - 136635.

Ten samples of mineral fraction derived from waste incineration bottom ash (MIBA) from Denmark (N = 7), Sweden (N = 1), and the Czech Republic (N = 2) underwent targeted analysis of 59 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the solid phase and eluates from a batch leaching test at a liquid-to-solid ratio of 2 L/kg. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Jafarinejad, S., et al. (2025). "Regeneration of biochars (pristine and modified/engineered) and economic analysis of their use in the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water/wastewater." Frontiers of Environmental Science and Engineering 19(2 C7 - 20).

This review article briefly compiles the state-of-the-art knowledge on the: (i) application of pristine and modified/engineered biochars for the sorptive removal of PFAS from aqueous samples; (ii) regeneration/reuse techniques for the spent biochars; and (iii) economic analysis of their use in PFAS removal from water/wastewater. © Higher Education Press 2025.

Li, S., et al. (2024). "Adverse outcome pathway for the neurotoxicity of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances: A systematic review." Eco Environ Health 3(4): 476-493.

In this review, we utilized the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) framework, a comprehensive tool for evaluating toxicity across multiple biological levels (molecular, cellular, tissue and organ, individual, and population), to elucidate the mechanisms of neurotoxicity induced by PFAS.

Lohmann, R., et al. (2024). "Cross-cutting studies of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in Arctic wildlife and humans." Sci Total Environ 954: 176274.

This cross-cutting review focuses on the presence and impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the Arctic.

MacKeown, H., et al. (2024). "Removal of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances from tap water by means of point-of-use treatment: A review." Sci Total Environ 954: 176764.

Herein, an overview of the literature regarding POU/POE efficacy in the removal of PFAS from tap water was compiled and critically discussed.

Maerten, A., et al. (2024). "Effects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances on the liver: Human-relevant mechanisms of toxicity." Sci Total Environ 954: 176717.

This review discusses the role of PFAS in liver toxicity with special attention paid to human relevance as well as to the mechanisms underlying the hepatotoxic effects of PFAS. Future perspectives and remaining knowledge gaps were identified to enhance future PFAS risk assessment.

Teng, B., et al. (2024). "Progress on the removal of PFAS contamination in water by different forms of iron-modified biochar." Chemosphere: 143844.

Few existing studies have systematically investigated the role of various forms of iron-modified biochar in PFAS removal. Accordingly, this review explores the following areas, the synthesis methods of different forms of iron-modified biochar, the removal effect on long and short-chain PFAS, the key factors affecting removal capacity and the mechanisms of their interaction, the mechanism of PFAS removal, and the regeneration capacity of the composites.

Wang, Y. and K. D. Good (2024). "Microplastics and PFAS air-water interaction and deposition." Sci Total Environ 954: 176247.

This review identifies types and levels of PFAS and MPs in air, their interactions, and environmental factors contributing to their air-water deposition. MPs in combination with PFAS may carry combined toxicity and pose elevated risks to ecosystems and human health. Our review shows that air-water deposition of MPs and PFAS can be governed by environmental factors including precipitation, humidity, UV, wind, and particulate matter levels in the air.

This ebook examines 7 Reasons to choose in situ PFAS remediation, which treats PFAS contaminants directly below the ground surface. This remediation alternative converts the aquifer into a subsurface filter by applying a technological innovation known as colloidal activated carbon (CAC), commercially offered as PlumeStop® and SourceStop®. In simple terms, preventing PFAS exposure risk comes down to a choice between treating PFAS aboveground or belowground. Both options are considered PFAS remediation, preventing the migration of these chemicals to eliminate or reduce the exposure risk (ITRC, 2020). However, the choice between aboveground or belowground approaches can have significant and lasting consequences relating to cost, community protection, and long-term liabilities for site owners, operators, and responsible parties dealing with PFAS contamination in groundwater.
