What’s a one-way degassing valve for coffee bag packaging?

A one-way degassing valve is a crucial component in the packaging of freshly roasted coffee beans. After roasting, coffee beans release carbon dioxide gas for a period of around two weeks. If this gas is not allowed to escape from the package, it can lead to the over-inflation or bursting of the packaging. Additionally, the degassing valve serves another important purpose – it enables consumers to smell the aroma of the coffee beans without opening the package, helping them make an informed decision before purchase.


The theory behind the one-way degassing valve is based on maintaining a pressure difference between the inside and outside of the coffee package. When the pressure inside the package increases due to the release of carbon dioxide, a tiny round rubber sheet in the valve bends, allowing the excess gas to escape. Importantly, this design prevents air from entering the package when there is a decrease in pressure.

There are different types of one-way degassing valves used in coffee packaging. The commonly used valve has a thin profile, allowing for more coffee bags to be accommodated in a single carton. The green cross in this valve provides effective support to the rubber sheet, preventing it from falling off under internal pressure. The potential failure of the degassing valve, such as the rubber sheet falling off, can result in coffee powder escaping from the valve, negatively impacting the coffee quality.

For coffee powder packaging, an additional non-fabric layer is applied over the degassing valve to prevent the powder from entering and blocking the valve's tiny gap when the rubber sheet bends.
