When in dilemma, do this one thing

In July, I celebrated 18 years of taking my first-ever flight to land at Changi Airport!

Coming from a humble background in a small city in India, I used to pretend that I was Harry Potter and that the National University of Singapore was my Hogwarts..

That my life was going to change for the better...

And change it did!

If in Jan 2006, anyone had shown me a crystal ball into the future, I would have called them a scammer...

Yet, here I am...

I remember during Global Financial Crisis when jobs were minimal, there was a huge discussion on how difficult it would be in Singapore...

How we (and our 1 up) were the unlucky batch - graduating in this environment

Still, we all managed to survive and now thrive!

And this is something I discuss with many of my coaching clients when they are in dilemma...

Zoom out!

A lot of times sticking with the discomfort for some time pays huge dividends in the end!

  • A client was recently complaining how she has struggled to get a job in Singapore. She felt she wanted to go back to India! We zoomed out to 10 years from now when this year would just be a blip.
  • Another client in the beginning of the year was in a dilemma on whether to accept an attractive offer in Singapore or leave for Europe to find a job. She has always wanted to work in Europe. She recently started a role in an amazing healthcare company in Denmark. The 3-4 months of job search in Europe will become an interesting anecdote to share.
  • And a third client is looking to pivot roles within the same function. Its been a ride! She asked me if she is just making a mistake. So, we considered if she would be willing to do her old scope for another 20+ years.

The point being - when we are in the midst of a challenge, it feels never-ending..

But when you zoom out and view it from 10 years in the future - they all seem like a blip.

So keep at it! Whatever your IT is.
