When Dinosaurs ruled the stage

When Dinosaurs ruled the stage

One of the things which has undoubtedly been missed since Easter is live music especially outdoors, why am I thinking about this today? Well, I guess we have been blessed with good weather this last week, but today is also the anniversary of a festival perhaps best remembered for mud, wellies, and music. That title, “When Dinosaurs ruled the Stage”, no not a reference to Jurassic Park but a pop group called “T-Rex” and their lead singer Marc Bolan. When Michael Eavis first decided to host a pop festival on his farmland in Somerset, on the 19th September 1970, they were the very first Headline Act.

Could Michael have realised then, how big Glastonbury would become, now welcoming over 200,000 people over the five-days of the Festival and covering far more than just pop music. Now dance, theatre, comedy, theatre, and other acts fill stages across the site. But this is not just a commercial exercise to make money, a lot of the people helping out are volunteers and thousands have been raised for many worthy causes.

This also highlights the paradox that is the arts, and that a success is not something you can create to order. Who would have believed the success of Glastonbury, who would have bet on the success of Les Miserables after it was panned by critics on the first night? From this take comfort, the human mind is a fickle thing and if you try something someday and it crashes hopelessly. It could just be that in the stars it was just not your turn, your did nothing wrong, Have patience, keep trying and your time will come.
