When paradoxes push you to grow into success

When paradoxes push you to grow into success

“Victory comes when I least expect it not when I strongly hope for it” is the “finding of the day" by Sang Nguyen, from KMS Healthcare’s Innovation Lab, during his interview with Humans of KMS.

Known for his unwavering determination and constant search for knowledge, Sang's on a remarkable journey in which he delves into the vast realm of the IT world and uncovers where it ultimately leads him.

The Vietnamese version is in the comment section. Don’t miss it!

Days of my different journey

“In my first year, I struggled with general subjects that didn't captivate my interest, so I didn't invest much time in them. Instead, I pursued independent learning, exploring various technologies like web programming, Data Science, autonomous driving cars, and AI. My learning style may not be the same as conventional methods, but it is uniquely my own and works for me.

Unexpected career opportunities started coming my way through various chance encounters. I eagerly took part in Gotcha Corona, a Coding Challenge hosted by KMS for IT students. The experience was exhilarating as contestants had to train an AI model to identify the target - Coronavirus - without mistakenly catching the wrong "doctor." My knowledge of AI languages gave me an advantage in this endeavor. Moreover, we had to maintain our positions in the "top server" rankings, with some participants sacrificing sleep to ensure their code ran flawlessly. Amidst the intense competition, my computer encountered several hiccups, even crashing multiple times. Thankfully, I managed to secure the top spot until the very end.

Through the challenge, I had the opportunity to connect with a KMSer, who happened to be an alumni of my school. This connection led to an invitation for an internship interview at KMS. The interview turned out to be a challenging 1-hour session. Initially, I had doubts about my chances of being accepted, as I struggled to answer many questions and relied on the manager's guidance for corrections. The manager kept asking questions until he reached the limits of my knowledge. Despite my initial uncertainties, I successfully passed the interview. I think the impression of my unwavering passion and commitment to staying updated with new technologies has convinced him.

After completing my 3-month internship, I mustered up the courage to propose becoming a full-time employee. However, as a sophomore, I really felt nervous. Aware of the challenges posed by the work-study balance, I meticulously devised a plan to ensure I could dedicate time to both aspects. Leveraging my school's policy of converting certificates into academic credits, I immediately pursued relevant certifications and submitted them for evaluation. As for the remaining subjects, I outlined how the knowledge from those courses would directly benefit my work. To my delight, the Director of Technology granted my request, affirming my commitment.

Later, when conducting interviews for interns at the Innovation Lab, I also prioritize candidates who exhibit a genuine passion for technology and a thirst for acquiring new knowledge.

I "bump into" a bunch of paradoxes on my journey

Throughout my journey, I have pumped into intriguing paradoxes. Against the norms that your job will be an obstacle to your study time, joining KMS and immersing myself in a busy work environment actually enhanced my academic results. Being a part of a professional team nurtured a mindset of continuous learning, granting me access to new technologies and invaluable experiences shared by my colleagues. My academic performance improved significantly, from a modest 5.0 in my first semester to a remarkable 9.0 upon graduation.

Paradox number two is about me being “zero” competitive. Pressing myself onto winning can actually lower my performance while approaching competitions with a relaxed and pressure-free mindset often leads me to winning. Take my experience with KMS competitions as an example, it was staying calm and composed consistently that got me to the top.

And now I have been with KMS for 2 years. My time at KMS also gave me many firsts, from the first (and longest) interview to the first flight (to Da Nang to be a speaker), to being the leader of the Innovation Lab. For me, each small success will gather into pride. I've come to realize that I often surpass my own expectations when I least anticipate them. Whether in studying or at my job, I have consistently found ways to push myself beyond boundaries in my own way. By nurturing a passion for continuous growth, I have discovered the key to unwavering motivation. Just that, and the rest will be fine.”
