"When the S.*.*.T hits the fan you will find out how good your culture really is..."

On New Years Eve 2019 the World Health Organisation office in China received the first reports of a virus breakout in a city called Wuhan. Since then metaphorical S.H.I.T has been hitting fans across the globe on a daily basis.

Fast forward to last Friday morning and I was sitting on my sofa looking for a quote to open up our weekly all company meeting hosted on Google Hangouts. I wanted to find a phrase or quote that accurately captured the moment but I couldn't find one. Then I realised why, people keep saying that times are "unprecedented" because we are in actual fact in UNPRECEDENTED times.

It turns out I won't be the next William Wordsworth or William Shakespeare. If only my parents had called me William Phelan! So instead I went with my main feeling...

"When the S.H.I.T hits the fan you will find out how good your culture really is..."

Despite all the chaos in the world I have been uplifted every single day by how amazing our employees have been. Our unique culture has really helped us get through the last few weeks.

Here are my 10 observations from the world of business over the last few months of the Coronavirus Covid-19 Pandemic

1) In tough times people will revert to type

This can manifest in all types of behaviour and you will really find out if all those cultural statements were true or just marketing slogans written to sound good.

2) A strong culture will thrive remotely, a weak culture will crumble.

Tech is just an enabler of remote working, culture will make or break it.

3) Getting your team involved in decision making will take more time from the week but save more time from the month and in the long term give you a better chance of still having a business in the year.

As founders we have included our management team in everything over the last few weeks. It has taken longer but it made our decision making much better and will ensure the long term success of The Happiness Index.

4) Trust is key

Unless you trust your team and they trust you then there is no point working together. Without trust as soon as a strong wind hits your businesses people will turn on each other in a negative way.

5) People will surprise you, there are a lot of Neville Longbottom's out there

Across our business from employees, to customers & suppliers people have surprised me in so many ways. From team members offering to work for free, to building a FREE version of our tech in 15 days, to being there for each-other at the end of a phone call. This isn't unique just to our business, people across the globe are standing up to be counted.

6) Be open, your People CAN handle the truth

Despite what Jack Nicholson tells us in A Few Good Men (Great film by the way) "You can't handle the truth!" your people CAN actually handle the truth. On Friday we shared with our team every detail of what we have been up to, how we plan to weather the storm and how we plan to come out of the other side of this thriving.

The more you share, the more your people can help and contribute to the fight back.

7) Redefining professionalism

Some people still don't get it, I was asked about an article in the FT last week that stated it was unprofessional for you to have your laundry in the background of a video call.

Time for leaders to wake up on this! Not everyone has a second home to work from, let alone a 2nd room to take their video calls from. Laundry will be in the background, kids will interrupt, people will accidentally go for a wee and Clint will definitely be naked on Zoom.

It doesn't make them unprofessional, it makes them human! Get over it, focus on the impact they make on your business and the measure of their character. The world has changed, your leadership style needs to too. Sorry, not sorry.

8) If you need to postpone your employee engagement survey in bad times then you probably didn't have an employee engagement survey in the first place.

We are now seeing the end of one size fits all question sets masquerading as employee engagement surveys. I have no issue with pre-built surveys (we also sell them) but don't call them employee engagement surveys.

Some of the employee engagement companies that sell this stuff may have hundreds of amazing clients, they may have millions of private equity rolling into their technology and the science behind them may sound plausible but it doesn't make it true or effective.

9) Adapt

You will read the following quote a LOT over the next 12 months, not because it is a cliche but because it is so true.

Charles Darwin

Our way to adapt and help through this Covid-19 crisis has been to release a FREE version of our Employee Voice 24/7 technology. If you would like to sign up please click here

10) Community is thriving

From our very own HR Punks community to people using the Nextdoor app community is thriving across the globe.

Summary:

Company culture isn't just for the good times and it isn't just for the bad times. Company culture is for ALL seasons 24/7.

Thank you and good night

Ps

One last final thank you to all the families, pets, partners and flatmates of our employees / customers. You have been incredibly patient as we have invaded your homes 24/7 for planning sessions via video call. I really appreciate it and won't forget it. Let's have a big party when this is all over :-)

Great post, Matthew. I especially agree with the point on the Truth - share what is going on with your team. I have seen some great examples of CEOs who would have a video call with every department to brainstorm solutions and to come up with ways forward together.

Great article Matthew Phelan 郎麦楚! I have been blown away by my team over the past couple of weeks and reading through your article has shown me why. We have put so much time and effort into building the culture at Little Dreamers Australia and while it isn't always something you see a return for right away, it's definitely times like these where it pays off in dividends. Thank you for your guidance and support as always. Sending well wishes from across the pond.

Fantastic read Matthew Phelan 郎麦楚 - as always, your ‘human’ approach shines through and agree company culture is key. At Mediablaze we’ve had very open, honest and frank conversations, the key message being ‘We are in this together’ - I feel genuinely blessed to work with such an amazing group of people. When this is over I’d like to introduce you over a beer (was this a good year for you to quit booze?) to Roger Barr 🔥 🏠 and Paul Button - you’ll get on like a house on fire!! Stay healthy and happy 🙌

Matt great work - got to love a Top 10 list! Point 2 is super spot on, and I'm actually seeing pride and togetherness grow at BT as this tough time - from the call centres to the engineers keeping the internet running for us at home and the NHS.
