When trainings don't solve your team's problems, coaching can help.
We have all been there. The team struggles to meet its objectives. Your manager wants to fix it and announces that there will be training where the team will learn X.
Classically, the manager didn't properly interview the team to identify the root of the problem and what was needed to achieve its goal.
The training day approached. Everyone was very excited and collaborative; the training was going well. There were lots of jokes and brainstorming activities.
After a week, people forgot what they learned in training and continued performing things the same way they did it before. Basically, nothing changed, except that money and time were spent.
Why is it happening?
What an organization thinks people need and what they actually need are two different things. Often, the team or some members perform poorly not because they lack hands-on skills but because some deep internal beliefs, assumptions, or habits prevent them from growing and getting better at what they do.
Btw, those people often don't know what holds them back. Even if they know, they are afraid to share it in training because those things might be very personal. So it should be discussed in person and in a safe environment.
That's why training without coaching might be ineffective. That's why it turns out to be team-building and has nothing to do with solving real problems that are deeply hidden.
The workshop won't help if your people:
- Feel disengaged and undervalued
- Feel Impostor Syndrom and afraid to be judged by others
Recommended by LinkedIn
- Frustrated by micromanagement and lack of freedom
- Don't trust their managers or colleagues
- Feel tired and mentally exhausted
- Lack feedback and support
Based on my experience, those things can't be fixed with one training or team-building activity. I know it because individuals come to me despite all the HR/L&D department's learning activities, workshops, and attempts to foster team performance.
So they hire me for their own money because they want my support in understanding why they feel a certain way and how they could change it.
Do you want to help your employees or organization thrive?
You need to understand what is really happening with them, what is missing, and what they really need from the organization to feel encouraged and perform at their best. When these insights are available, it's time to add educational activities like training and workshops.
