Where is the best place to store corporate data: Cloud Computing, Edge Cloud or Edge Computing?

We all know the value of data, which is why choosing the right place to store it is critical to realizing its full potential. In this article, I will show you what requirements you need to evaluate in order to prefer a location close to the source or a remote server. It all depends on the business context, the activity we perform and also the investment we are willing or able to make.

In general, Cloud Computing is a versatile and scalable solution. It adapts to a wide range of needs thanks to services that provide access to computing and data storage resources on remote servers. It is therefore ideal for many businesses that do not want to invest in their own infrastructure or need a service that can adapt quickly to changes.

Edge Computing and Edge Cloud, on the other hand, take advantage of processing data close to its source, reducing latency and freeing up network bandwidth. This solution is chosen by companies using IoT technology, autonomous vehicles or augmented reality applications, where the speed of data processing is crucial to react in real time and avoid process interruptions.

What are the parameters that could help you in the choice?

  • Latency and Bandwidth: if these two aspects are not variables you can choose Cloud Computing, otherwise, if you need low latency and want to preserve bandwidth better Edge Computing/Edge Cloud.
  • Data processing: if a lot of resources are needed for data processing and storage, Cloud Computing is preferable. If, on the other hand, processing is simple and speed of response is a crucial variable, it is better to opt for Edge Computing/Edge Cloud.
  • Scalability and flexibility: as mentioned above, these two aspects are better on Cloud Computing, whereas Edge Computing/Edge Cloud are less adaptable to changes but are more performant for very specific applications.
  • Cost: Cloud Computing may be more expensive in the long run, but it offers flexible payment models such as pay-as-you-go. On the other hand, Edge Computing/Edge Cloud may require higher initial costs related to the design and implementation of the infrastructure but reduce data transmission costs in the long term.
  • Security and privacy: while Cloud Computing solutions offer greater security, storing data in one place can be a risk. Edge computing/Edge Cloud, by processing data locally, reduces security risks but only if one invests in high-performance cybersecurity solutions.
  • Data location: storing and processing information in the cloud allows access to data from anywhere in the world, which is not the case when the process is located close to the fortress and is only accessible through internal networks.

It can be challenging to select the optimal solution as each company has its unique characteristics, and in some instances, they adopt hybrid options. If you need specific examples, I suggest reading the complete article on the DeltalogiX blog.
