Which is best for you - Psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, psychiatry, or psychology?
Recently a client asked me this question and I did not know the answer. So I turned to my qualified NYC based cousin Christina Garidis (in the second photo) to paint the picture for me.
All of those mentioned above are licensed to deliver various mental health services. There are some differences though that are easily missed: psychiatrists are licensed to prescribe and during their residency, they are primarily trained to do psychopharmacology. So their training has been assessing people diagnostically in psychiatric hospitals or other settings and deciding how to treat the distress with drugs.
Psychiatry is helpful to talk therapy as an adjunct: for example, if the person were so depressed or having a psychotic break with reality, a danger to themselves or others that talk therapy could not progress without some medication to relieve those symptoms.
A clinical psychologist has a lot more training in talk therapy than a psychiatrist but they also spend a lot of time administering tests like structured diagnostic tests and conducting research. Clinical social workers get their training in “the field” by practicing psychotherapy in community settings like psychotherapy clinics, hospitals, schools, etc.
Licensed mental health counselors and family and couples counselors do mostly talk therapy throughout their training as well.

All of the above-mentioned can do additional training after they get their degrees to become psychoanalysts. This additional “postgraduate” training requires the already licensed mental health professional (eg psychiatrist, clinical social worker, psychologist, etc.) to attend seminars; undergo their own psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and supervision for years in many programs. Some choose to do this through an institute or privately. There are other types of post-grad that are not psychoanalytic like CBT.
