Who I'm Following Online: AI Edition
As I shared in my Who I’m Following Online: Space Edition, it’s more important now than ever to find voices online that you can listen to and trust. And in an industry that moves as quickly as AI, I feel it’s extra critical to be extra selective of who you follow. I have a few favorites who are leading the field right now, and thought it was worth sharing them with you:
- As current Head of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at the World Economic Forum, this doesn’t do justice for Kay Firth-Butterfield’s years of work to bring responsible AI development to the forefront of every conversation. I appreciate her ethics-first approach to AI.
- The author of one of my favorite superintelligence books, and a true pioneer in the world of human-enhancement ethics, I appreciate the way Nick Bostrom is on the forefront of questioning the latest AI-focused technologies. Not to say that I agree with him all the time, but if you know me, you know I love a good thought-provoking statement.
- Mia Shah-Dand is an advocate for responsible innovation at scale in AI & emerging tech, as well as diversity in tech. She also happens to run one of my favorite Twitter Chats: #AIEthics.
- You can thank Oriol Vinyals for Gmail’s Smart Reply. Beyond that, his work is awe-inspiring in a way that merges some of the things I loves in life: AI and gaming. As a current Principal at Google DeepMind, Oriol’s focuses on creating computers that can teach themselves how to play and win complex games thereby learning from experience.
- Dr. Sally Eaves is one of the few leaders I’ve interacted with who shares an aligned vision about the interconnectivity between the future of technology and technology for good.
- For years Dr. Fei-Fei Li has been a mainstay in the world of understanding how to use ethical AI to better humanity. I respect her vision and not only enjoy following her work, but the work of her team at Stanford’s Human Centered AI Institute.
- Lex Fridman is a research scientist at MIT working on human-centered AI and deep learning. He is consistently spearheading AI questions that plague our generation. Understanding social robotics and the ethics of social robotics in the time of COVID-19, anyone?
- While on the edge of more generalized AI, Ronald van Loon shares breaking AI news faster than anyone else I follow, and for a field that moves so quickly, I appreciate that speed to market.
- Finally, I must shout out my own Hypergiant team on social: Will Griffin, Chief Ethics Officer; C.K. Sample, Chief Technology Officers; and Kristina Libby, Chief Science Officer.
While this list is preliminary, I’d love to expand who I’m following. Who are you following and why? Tell me in the comments below!
