Who Wants to Be a White-Collar Crime Lawyer? 🧐⚖️💰🕵️♂️
How often are we able to dive deep into the day-to-day life of a lawyer acting in arguably one of the 'juiciest' areas of law...White-Collar Crime!
But what actually is White-Collar Crime? 🤔
The term "white-collar crime" refers to a financially motivated, non-violent or non-directly violent crime committed by individuals, businesses and government professionals.
Examples include public corruption, health care fraud, mortgage fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering, to name just a few!
Here are some not-so-fun white-collar crime facts:
👀 Experts predict the anti-money laundering market to reach 2385.8 million by 2036.
👀 Cybercrime damage will cost the global economy $10.5 trillion annually by 2025.
This would be the first time EVER exploring this area of law on the Legally Speaking Podcast ™️ powered by Clio - Cloud-Based Legal Technology .
So we needed someone with a proven track record who knew a thing or two about all things white-collar crime.
Thankfully we worked some magic and were delighted to welcome to Tim Harris to the show.
Tim has been involved in a number of London’s highest-profile investigations, trials and public enquiries! ⚖️🎙👨 ⚖️
Tim started his legal career training as a solicitor at Eversheds Sutherland , before specialising in business and white-collar crime in the financial services sector, at BARK & CO SOLICITORS LIMITED and then Simmons & Simmons .
While at Simmons, Tim was a legal secondee at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch .
Now, he is a Counsel at Cohen & Gresser LLP , focusing on white collar criminal defence, including internal and regulatory investigations, regulatory enforcement, and financial crime compliance.
He advises clients dealing with FCA supervisory examinations and enforcement action.
In this episode, Tim and I discussed:
🚨 What is considered a white-collar crime and Tim's past experiences
🚨 An insight into some of Tim's highest-profile investigations, trials and public inquiries
🚨 What you can expect from a Counsel and what they do in a typical day
🚨 Some of the key issues affecting white-collar crime and investigating the legal market
🚨 Opportunities that often arise in pro bono work and why it's worth considering as a legal professional!

4) Akil Hunte - Trainee Solicitor at CMS , Chair of NRG Lawyers & Public Speaker
During university many students and graduates lack confidence about going into a legal career due to the ranking of the university they went to, namely (and typically), Non-Russell Group.
The pandemic has not only led to grades being given based on preferential treatment, but it has also meant those with less resources have had to do more with less.
The reality is, not having the role models or access to opportunities can make you doubt yourself and, consequently, many self-select themselves out of processes.
This certainly should not be the case and NRG Lawyers do not want this to be the future!
Led by Akil, NRG Lawyers want to level the playing field for Non-Russell Group students and graduates by visibly changing the legal landscape, breaking barriers for the next generation.
Recommended by LinkedIn
As legal opportunities become harder to come by due to the pandemic and role models become less visible NRG Lawyers are here to change this narrative for the better!
🚀 The mission:
NRG Lawyers is an organisation that aims to pave the way for Non-Russell Group students and graduates in their legal careers through guidance and support.
👓 The vision:
Visibly changing the legal landscape by breaking barriers for NRG Lawyers.
📌 Want to get involved?
I sit as an advisory board member to NRG Lawyers and find the role exceptionally fulfilling. I want to help get behind this incredible mission and vision.
