Why Chasing Likes Is Killing Your Business (and What to Do Instead)

Why Chasing Likes Is Killing Your Business (and What to Do Instead)

This past fall, I spent $9,000 on a content coach and three hours a day crafting social media posts, engaging with comments, and trying to “win” at LinkedIn.

The results?

  • Some likes.
  • A little engagement.
  • Burnout.

I didn’t even finish my contract. (but yes I paid all the $$$)

It wasn’t the coach’s fault—it was the approach I was taking to social media.

Then I remembered something: my first company didn’t take off because I was glued to LinkedIn. It succeeded because I built something better—a Revenue Machine.

What Is a Revenue Machine?

A Revenue Machine is the antidote to the hustle culture of modern content creation. It’s a system that turns your expertise into consistent income, credibility, and impact.

Here’s what it does:

  • Builds Authority: Establishes you as the go-to expert in your field.
  • Generates Revenue: Turns your knowledge into income streams.
  • Delivers Impact: Solves real problems for your audience in a scalable way.

And it doesn’t rely on constant content creation. A Revenue Machine works for you, even when you’re not working.

My Turning Point: Building My First Revenue Machine

When I wrote my first Mini Book, The Independent Adjuster Playbook, I wasn’t trying to build a system. I just wanted to answer a question people kept asking me: “How do I become an independent adjuster?”

I had no grand plans. I wasn’t thinking about marketing or strategy. I just sat down and wrote a short, straightforward book that laid out a clear path for anyone who wanted to break into the insurance adjusting industry.

But something surprising happened.

That book didn’t just sell—it became the foundation of an entire business.

From that one Mini Book, I built IA Path, a company that generated $800,000 in revenue and became a trusted name in the industry.

Here’s the key: everything in the business tied back to that book. It was more than a product—it was my framework, my signature message, and the starting point for every service, course, and resource we created.

That one Mini Book became the engine of a Revenue Machine.

It gave me authority in my niche. It attracted the exact audience I wanted to serve. And it created a system that worked for me, rather than me working constantly to attract clients.

Why Chasing Likes Doesn’t Work

When you focus on likes, you’re playing a short-term game. You’re competing for attention in an endless sea of content. Even if you win today, you’ll be starting over tomorrow.

The problem is simple: there’s no system.

Likes don’t build trust. Followers don’t automatically become customers. And churning out more content only burns you out faster.

The First Step to Building Your Revenue Machine

It all starts with a single question: What problem do you solve, and who do you solve it for?

Your Revenue Machine begins with clarity.

  • What’s the specific outcome you can deliver for your audience?
  • Who are the people who need it most?

Once you know this, everything else falls into place. Your Mini Book becomes the tangible expression of that clarity, and from there, you can build an entire ecosystem.

Next Week: The 7 Components of a Revenue Machine

Now that you know why chasing likes won’t work, it’s time to build something that does.

Here’s a preview of what’s coming next week:

  1. The Chassis (Niche): The foundation of your business.
  2. The Engine (Mini Book): The driver of your Revenue Machine.
  3. The Transmission (Marketing): How you connect your book to your audience.
  4. The Tires (Products): Revenue streams that grow from your Mini Book.
  5. The Body (Brand): How your audience perceives you.
  6. The Dashboard (Metrics): Tracking what works and scaling what matters.
  7. The Fuel (Community): Turning your readers into loyal superfans.
