Steve is a Plane Crash Survivor, International Best Selling Author, Lawyer Coach and Trainer, Peer-Advisory Facilitator, Keynote Speaker and Advocate for Ambitious Lawyers Everywhere!

The podcast was created to demystify the most challenging elements of growing a sustainable law practice through practical tips, fresh ideas and new methodologies. In this episode, we discuss:

💥 Why firms are struggling to retain talent.

💥 Firm and personal branding for lawyers.

💥 How to start a story (hint, it’s not your name).

💥 Reflecting on your why.

Key Takeaways from our episode together:

💥 Give trust to your employees – they do not need to be (or want to be) micromanaged.

💥 If you build a personal brand, more revenue-generating opportunities will come your way.

💥 Everyone who has a very successful personal brand is excellent at storytelling.

💥 We, as humans, are drowning in information, but what we are craving is wisdom.

💥 Contacts are good, but relationships pay.

“I’m still finessing my storytelling because the number one thing people buy is a human-to-human relationship. We talk about B2B and B2C. No, it’s H2H, it’s human to human.” — Robert Hanna

The UK has now identified 5 new areas off the coasts of Cornwall and Wales, which could soon host "floating" wind farms in order to achieve its ambition to provide power to millions of homes around the UK. There have been incredible efforts to escape the impacts of the fossil fuel energy crisis, the Government has looked beyond to invest in revolutionary new renewable energy technologies which could help reduce bills and power without the need to use oil and gas.

Given the new technologies used, the discovery of the outcome has lightened and acted as a major leap forward for the UK as 5 new areas have been located just off the coast of Cornwall and Wales, where research shows the ability to deploy this technology there. Further, research shows that where these offshore wind farms have been built further away from coasts and will allow for the harness of stronger winds.

Also, there has been further research into these sites and their capabilities to provide power to millions of homes around the UK and aside from accessing higher wind speeds, they will also increase yield and capacity factors which satisfies the competitive Levelised Costs of Energy (LCoE). This floating technology is the key to unlocking the full potential of the coastline and bringing economic growth and abundant clean power.

Perhaps overshadowed by the rail strikes last week, in this weeks news we have seen criminal barristers across England and Wales striking in a response to an ongoing dispute surrounding their pay.

Reportedly, eight out of ten cases at London’s Old Bailey were affected by the walkout, with Secretary of Justice Dominic Raab fearing that the strikes would further ‘delay justice’, with the courts already facing a backlog of 58,000 cases.

Whilst barristers have been offered a 15% rise in their fees in return for their increased intake of Legal Aid cases, this has been wholeheartedly rejected, with members of the Criminal Bar Association calling for at least a 25% increase.

With proposed strikes expecting to last for the next four weeks, the courts of England and Wales are expected to take further strain following the already devastating loss of a quarter of specialist criminal barristers over the past five years, with 300 having left in the last year alone.

Whilst a proposed increase of Legal Aid is expected next year, deputy chair of the Criminal Bar Association, Kirsty Brimelow QC, has stated that this may be too little too late in terms of preventing further junior barristers from leaving the bar.

Coal appears to making a comeback in recent times, with the previously snubbed power source being used more and more frequently by developed countries.

In recent weeks and months countries, who previously have been trying to wean themselves off coal for environmental reasons, have been making increasing numbers of short-term coal purchases. This is mainly to ensure uninterrupted power supply at a time when running out of energy is a real concern for a lot of residents. This does mean that longer term anti-coal pledges are on the back-burner for the time-being, but when the alternative is not being able to heat your own country over the winter, it is understandable why this path has been chosen.

Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the desire not to fund Russia wherever possible, Europe is currently the largest purchaser of coal. This desire to wean themselves off Russian gas and oil will definitely help these countries to justify this, arguably backdated, method of obtain fuel to their populations.

The other area where demand has sky-rocketed recently is the US where, due to exceptionally hot temperatures, and the related desire to have air-conditioning units running more often, have seen power grids at their limits and the potential for blackouts if alternative fuel sources aren't found.

As a result of this increased demand, China (the world's largest exporter of coal) is increasing production to help meet this increased global need. Coal miners such as the anglo-swiss Glencore are using this demand to their advantage and making hay while the sun shines, so to speak. They are predicting $3.2bn in trading profit for the first half of this year - nearly matching the $3.7bn for the whole of 2021.

Whilst it is easy to argue against coal for environmental reasons, this trend of increased coal production and usage seems to be here to stay in the short-term, as the human aspect of losing power, particularly as we come towards the colder months, is a much more difficult issue for people to contend with.
