Why Does Value Stream Mapping Work (Part 2)
Value Stream Mapping addresses 3 key elements of organizational #change.
The Magical Formula for Change
Richard Beckhard's #formulaforchange, often referred to as the Beckhard-Harris Change Model, is a widely accepted framework used to guide organizational change efforts. The formula offers a simplified analysis of the conditions governing the potential success or failure of a given change initiative as follows:
D x V x F > R
The model rests on the assumption that organizations or individuals only change when:
• Dissatisfaction: there is dissatisfaction that people want to change;
• Vision: people share a clear vision of a future situation that is better and achievable;
• First steps: the action plan to achieve the vision is acceptable and sets out the first steps to be taken;
• Resistance: the combined strength of the three factors above is greater than the existing resistance to change.

How does Value Stream Mapping support change?
Value stream mapping works well with the Beckhard-Harris Change Model because it addresses all three elements of the model.
The first element, #dissatisfaction, is often the driving force behind a company's decision to implement a value stream mapping exercise. When leaders and employees are dissatisfied with the current state of their processes, they are more likely to embrace change and seek out opportunities to improve. Value stream mapping provides a structured approach to identifying and eliminating the sources of dissatisfaction, such as long lead times, bottlenecks, missing collaboration, and defects.
The second element of the model is a compelling #vision of the future. Value stream mapping helps teams create this vision by providing a clear picture of what the process will look like after the changes are implemented. By visualizing the future state, teams are motivated to work towards achieving it and have a shared understanding of the end goal.
The final element of the Beckhard-Harris Change Model is a practical #firststep toward realizing the vision. Value stream mapping provides this first step by identifying quick wins that can be implemented immediately. These quick wins are usually small changes that have a significant impact, such as reducing the number of handoffs in a process or eliminating unnecessary paperwork. By starting with these small changes, teams build momentum and gain confidence in their ability to make more significant improvements.
