Why Farmer's Markets Are Worth Going To
Farmer's Markets are places you can go to.
You get to meet the farmer, buy food, and enjoy how it's made.
There are a few things you may not be aware of.
Here are three tips about farmer's markets:
Tip #1: Make a plan and be aware of the food that is in season.
Unlike grocery stores, farmers carry food at the time its produced.
Take the time to get familiar with seasonal produce.
This helps you to know what kind of fruits and vegetables might be available.
For example: The summertime is great for watermelons.
Love apples? The fall season would be great to buy fresh apples.
Make a list of what staples you need for your kitchen or home.
You can print out a map online or get one at a farmer's market near you.
Visit a farmer's market to learn what days they are open.
You can be early to get the best choices.
You can come later to get discounts to save money.
This help the farmer not carry the food back to the farm.
Choose what time is best for you.
Tip #2: Be sure to bring cash and bags when you can.
Not all farms use technology.

Bring cash, credit or debit card, and coins.
Know your budget and bring shopping bags.
If you buy a lot, you can bring a shopping cart.
Tip #3: You support the community and get to know your farmers.
Farmers work hard to bring what they have grown into your community.
Speak to a farmer to learn about the food, how it is grown, and what’s coming up next.
Don't be afraid to ask questions.
I like asking how fresh or when was the food made.
Farmers can give you tips and recipes to help you get the most out of your experience.
Introduce yourself.
Be a regular.
Have fun.
One thing that is underrated about farmer's markets: Samples!
You get to sample the food and taste the food.
Be sure to ask the farmer if you can have a sample.
Farmer's markets can help you connect to the community and to know where your food comes from.
Visit a farmer's market near you.

2yFun weekend read and I’ll be at the farmer’s market today at Union square (a favorite) and tomorrow near me. I’m a big fan of supporting local growers and have gotten to know quite a few of them upstate. I enjoy most showing up without a plan and being inspired by what’s available and building a menu spontaneously as I wander. Have a great weekend Craig Davis !

2yLove farmer's markets. They are pricier than going to the store, but I see the value in sourcing local for quality and sustainability. And getting to know them is bonus too!

2yGreat tips Craig Davis! We walk to the farmers market in our neighborhood every Sunday! This is a great way to meet your community, get outside, and explore new foods. Our neighborhood parent network gives kids a $5 token to pick out any produce they like!
