A good geospatial software, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), is critical for improving a company's asset management for several reasons. This is true for both mobile and fixed-location assets:
1. Enhanced Asset Tracking: GIS allows for precise tracking of both mobile units and stationary equipment. By mapping the exact locations of assets, companies can monitor their deployment and movement in real-time, ensuring optimal utilization.[i]
2. Improved Maintenance Planning: With GIS, companies can schedule proactive and predictive maintenance. This reduces unexpected failures and downtime by identifying potential issues before they become critical.
3. Data Integration and Management: GIS integrates various data sources, providing a comprehensive view of all assets. This helps in managing data more effectively, ensuring that all relevant information is accessible and up-to-date.[ii]
4. Spatial Analysis: GIS enables spatial analysis, allowing companies to analyze the geographical distribution of their assets. This can help in identifying patterns, optimizing routes for mobile units, and making informed decisions about asset placement [1].
5. Cost Savings: By improving asset tracking and maintenance, GIS helps in reducing operational costs. Efficient asset management leads to better resource allocation and minimizes unnecessary expenditures. [iii]
6. Regulatory Compliance: GIS helps companies comply with regulatory requirements by providing accurate and up-to-date information about their assets. This is particularly important for industries with stringent regulatory standards.[iv]
7. Enhanced Field Operations: Mobile apps with GIS capabilities streamline field data collection and asset updates. This improves the efficiency of field operations and ensures that data is collected accurately and promptly [2].
Overall, GIS provides a powerful tool for managing assets more effectively, leading to improved operational efficiency, cost savings, and better decision-making.

Prediction
I have been amazed at the proliferation of Geospatial/GIS providers. It is like the early days of the auto industry in which dozens of companies were making cars and as the market matured a few dominant players emerged. It is logical to predict that the number of both Geospatial/GIS software and service providers will see a major consolidation in the coming years.
Cheers, Tony
