Why Good People Do Bad Things

Why Good People Do Bad Things

There are many reasons why good people do bad things. But whatever the reasons, even when done with good intentions, they frequently come back and bite us. -- Instead, we should discipline ourselves to avoid dishonesty and bad behavior. -- Develop a list of characteristics that you want your personality to possess. -- 'Maturity' is developed by determining who you want to be and persevering until your achieve it.

Some of the most common reasons that lead us into making bad decisions are:

  • Pressure from others. People often do things they know are wrong because they feel pressured to do so by others. This can happen in a number of different contexts, such as in a group setting, at work, or in a relationship.
  • Stress and anxiety. When people are under a lot of stress or anxiety, they may be more likely to make bad decisions. This is because stress can cloud our judgment and make us more likely to act impulsively.
  • Fear. Sometimes people do bad things out of fear. For example, someone might steal something because they are hungry. Or, someone might lie to avoid getting in trouble.
  • Mental illness. Some people who do bad things have a mental illness that affects their judgment or behavior. For example, someone with borderline personality disorder may act impulsively and make self-destructive choices.
  • The situation. The situation in which someone finds themselves can sometimes make them do things they would not normally do. For example, someone who is in a survival situation may be more likely to steal or lie in order to stay alive.
  • The culture. The culture in which someone lives can also influence their behavior. For example, in some cultures, it is considered acceptable to bribe officials in order to get things done.
  • The individual. Each person is unique and has their own set of experiences, values, and beliefs. These factors can all play a role in how someone behaves.

It is important to remember that everyone is capable of doing bad things, even good people. There is no single explanation for why this happens, but it is important to understand the factors that can contribute to bad behavior. Thereby, we gain a better understanding of universal human behavior and of our own.

Humility. Understanding and appreciating the harmful tendencies we share with all of humanity must lead us to acquiring a less judgmental attitude towards others and also our self. -- As the Bible teaches us, "For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard." Therefore, realize that when we judge another, we judge ourselves. And that must lead to developing Compassion.

Wonderful message and explanation of where and how humility and compassion can guide our lives Mark. When we realize that no one wakes up in the morning with the intention of doing harm, we can look past the actions to the causes and work to improve those. This post gives a great map for where to look for those causes.

I have the word humility on my vision board. It is something I strive for everyday because it's way too easy to get caught up in my ego. . That doesn't serve me. Nor does it serve the purpose of bringing the highest value to my clients or the work that I do to my friendships to my family and to honor God.

Such an interesting article! There are so many outside forces that contribute to people's actions. It's important to understand these factors not to excuse the actions, but understand the motives behind certain actions.
