Why it's the good solution to improve the weld line by increasing the injection speed?

High injection speed offers several benefits that contribute to the improvement of weld line quality during the plastic injecton process:

  1. Reduced filling time: When the injection speed is increased, the filling time required to complete the process becomes shorter. This results in a lower temperature drop when the two melt streams meet, minimizing the likelihood of defects at the weld line.
  2. Lower melt viscosity: The increased friction heat generated during the filling stage at high injection speeds reduces the viscosity of the melt. This lower viscosity enables easier transfer of pressure during the packing and holding stages, ensuring better flow and reducing the risk of visible weld line defects.
  3. Enhanced molecular interaction: High injection speeds require greater energy for molecular motion. As a result, the molecules at the interface of the welding area have a higher likelihood of interlocking with each other, leading to improved strength at the weld line.
  4. Thinner weld line: The improved transfer of packing pressure facilitated by high injection speeds results in a thinner weld line, typically characterized as a V-shaped notch. A thinner weld line enhances the appearance of the final product, contributing to better aesthetics and overall quality.
  5. Reduced frozen skin thickness: High injection speeds also contribute to a thinner frozen skin at the weld line. This reduced thickness of the frozen skin further enhances the visual appeal of the weld line.

While high injection speeds undoubtedly improve the quality of the weld line, it's important to consider other factors for optimal results.

These factors include ensuring adequate strength, effective venting, and precision in the parting surface of the mold. These considerations are essential for achieving the best possible weld line quality.

All these factors are important, and form part of the scientific method. Moulders should present a certificate from a trainer of the scientific method when they apply for a job. It's so important to understand the underlying theory of the process.
