Why I don't like Europass CVs

Why I don't like Europass CVs

Well 50 millions of CV over last 10 years but fortunately for us that could have been more than that.

If you don't know Europass, the idea was quite good, helping people to present their skills and qualifications effectively and clearly. You can go to Europass website and build your own CV in 10 minutes.

Let's face it, every single time you send an Europass CV you can be sure to have the recruiter on the other side "oh, not again...", "let's focus on content, huh, where is the content?", "i must stop my finger to press the reject button right now". But why? Epidermic reaction?

To be fair this is probably the ugliest CV template ever, even if problems are probably more on how candidates are using it rather than the template layout.

Most of recruiters spend between 25 sec and 1 minute on a CV, and expect to see most relevant information about a fit between the job and the candidate in the first quarter of the first page. What you got on a Europass... Big logo on top left and personal info most of the time on 15 to 25% of first page, we also got pictures covering half the page.

Most candidates simply fill all boxes but don't spend time on customization. Main problem is here, a CV can tell something about you, sending an Europass is already not good personal marketing, but sending as it, without any customization is even worst.

If you really want to use Europass, and reading all that, believe me, you should not, most common mistakes due to the layout of Europass that you should avoid :

  • Europass seems to be very popular in academic world. And you can switch order to have Lonnnnnnnnnnnnng list of training, various courses, publications etc.. on first 2 or even 3 pages, and experience on page 4. And for some unknown reason some candidates seem to think that's a good idea
  • Candidate simply follow blindly the template and won't go further than a list of tasks, no context, no numbers. I would probably like to know the size of computer park, brand, and the type of suppliers, the budget. But no, most candidates keep that short.
  • No emphasis at all on anything, if you don't take 20 minutes to clean up, to bold important information, to delete ugly page breaks, let's say that the recruiter won't probably check "attention to details" on his shopping list.
  • Personal skills and competences. If you are lucky that will take half a page, if not that can go up to one full page. The very ugly table for languages. Most recruiters will accept a native, fluent or professional, you will be tested on it anyway. Usually long list of of personal skills who could be more easy to read for us if related to your experience, you have "management skills", ok but where, and how many peoples did you managed? That should not be here, that should be in your experience.

Once again when you see and review thousands of CVs per year, even if not scientifically proved, most recruiters have a bump, telling them a bit about how you work and how you are just by reading your CV. And using Europass CV makes you "unreadable" or even worst "ok he/she did not do any effort to write a real CV", probably not a good sign to give to recruiters.
If i am expecting some students looking for their first job to use Europass, i am still always surprised when i receive this kind of format for Director level (yes it happens) or for some creative positions as marketing.

CV is all about personal branding, this is YOUR main tool to get a job. If you need to rely on Europass, or if it takes only 10 minutes to do yours, i suggest to start again and really putting some of yourself in it.

I could not agree more than that. For some reasons, it seems that people from the south of Europe have a tendency to over use this template... I could not relate it to any sort of cultural reasons.. just from experience... Anyway, it is quite ugly and counter-productive. Europass users, do yourself a favour : make your own CV, take example from best practices and don't venture too far from the Linkedin way of presenting your experience/skills as it has become quite a benchmark in the business. Play simple.

Nice post ! I often asked recruiters their expectations for the resume, and Europass is never mentioned. It's not a subject ! Personal branding and Europass are not compatible, you're right...

I think that one idea of the EuroPass was initially that everybody would use the same template so recruiters would focus on the content, not on a pretty template. But I agree that many use it as an excuse to be lazy and even sloppy. I remember the first time I saw a EuroPass CV. It's not a nice memory. I think my eyes even hurt for half a day... ;-)
