Why I Joined SourceScrub
It took me a year to find SourceScrub. Yes, that is a long time for a job search, but career decisions are important, and the stakes get higher as you go.
Every job I’ve taken, my bar has gotten higher. Now I look not only for a great team and business, I look at things like board dynamics, net churn and durability of company vision. Thanks to the wonderful recruiters at Daversa, SPMB and 3FORTY3 I saw a lot of amazing opportunities over the last year.
At first blush, SourceScrub didn’t fit my ICP (Ideal Company Profile). It was smaller than my target, they hadn’t raised “go big” money, and I didn’t love the name.
But, as with many things in life… logic and intuition can diverge quickly.
My first meeting with Tyler was... different. He told me he had no business being a CEO, most of his initial hires were friends from high-school and, would I like to come to the company holiday party next week? He was affable, vulnerable and open.
Prescott - the other co-founder - less so. Here was a CTO cut from a more typical engineer cloth… very smart, highly logical and eager to argue. After a few conversations, however, I discovered he and Tyler shared a set of core values that turns out to be more important to me than net churn.
Prescott shared how they put their employees first - defending people who had been loyal to the company from the start. I attending the company party (and Sales Kick-Off afterwards). Through games of cornhole and a Crab Boil I saw how much both he and Tyler cared about creating the right culture - one that makes people not only successful but happy. They showed consideration for all the stakeholders of their endeavor - investors, employees, and customers alike.
And in the end, that’s what sold me… the company has HEART.
In this day and age, as the world spins madly on, I vote for heart. Heart above logic, compassion above business model.
And in the end, perhaps my ICP criteria gets a lot simpler.
(A big thanks to Gavin, David, Michael and the rest of the Mainsail team!)
