Why I love music and science and its effect on how I do marketing

One of the Reasons I Love Science , Music and Marketing          by Wendy Lynch

I have a very healthy respect for science. Because science holds accountability in it’s way to reaching answers. It is a fascinating topic and also one which I love to learn about more and more. I always had an excellent ear for music, in the industry, working with acts, and doing music beds, commercials, and predicting good hit songs, even before they became hits. That is why I am successful in the music industry, and touring.

But lets talk music and science, and how I leaned to love music even more through studying science. And how I also came to understand that marketing is also a science.

I have worked most of my life in marketing within the music industry. I have always had a good and discerning ear for music and had to use that listening along with my creative talents to come up with great sounding commercials for the artists I work with. With my job I have to do full tours and TV, radio and digital spots for my artists, from Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Jill Scott, Lil Wayne, Drake, Mary J. Blige, Chris Brown, J. Cole, Stevie Wonder, ASAP Rocky, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and more . I have done all the creative, for years for my artists tours , doing the music beds and writing the copy and using :15 :30 and :60 seconds to SELL a product. And using digital media, and internet to do ads…( also science based). Consumer data is a science, and these numbers are used to make good ad buys, marketing, plans and media buys. Think Nielsen, Arbitron, Reach, Frequency, Audience size, demographics, targeting, ( all science).

I decided to go back to school in 2017 for sound and recording engineering at The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Science which is an excellent , intense school for recording arts and sciences, audio business and working on and learning on some kick ass analog consoles and learning computers, hearing, sound and the mechanics of it all. It was a very condensed program over nine months that taught you every aspect of the recording industry, I was keen to get behind the mixing boards and large 48 track consoles and learn recording. These things are beautiful and you feel like your on the Starship Enterprise from behind the boards. Solid state logic at it's best...wow. An analog girls dream. Analog girl. Digital world.

When school began, I was in for a big surprise. We were studying science !. Before we got anywhere near the consoles. We learned about the science of hearing. The mechanics of the sound waves hitting the eardrum , the ear drum itself and all of its parts and how it processes sound . The speed at which sound waves move in feet per second. And all the fundamentals of electricity. The way the brain perceives sound, the directions from which sound travels to our brains. All science.

We learned computer processing power, decibels, live sound, analog versus digital sound , sample rates and bit depths and the way they were used in recording. We learned the fundamentals of sound and acoustics . We learned about the historic inventors of sound from radios Marconi to the early engineers of sound. We learned about the magnetics and science of tape. And how the allies winning World War 2 gave them the access to germans advanced use of tape and it's secrets. We learned computers processing, A-D conversions, math, science and audio business ( my fave subject). We learned soldering, built connection devices, ran sound boards…..recorded drums, symphony’s and dialogue . We did foley too.

One thing for sure is I learned what our professors warned, you will never listen to a recording the same way again. I can now hear all the tracks, the background, the panning left or right on a recording and it is with a critical ear that I listen. But the records are so different now that I can hear the tracks, effects and layers and I love this. Science and art. What a combination.

All this has let me be a better marketer, better at media, a better and more critical thinker. And a better media buyer. And a much better listener to songs. I can hear panning, and tracks and effects and it is so exciting to always be open to learning and apply that everyday. I never knew growing up I would be using math everyday and science . Glad I know now its importance. So do your math and pay attention in science kids it can lead you to an exciting life.
