❤️ Why I love working in Marketing

Of all the types of roles I've done in my career (outside of all-rounder entrepreneur) I've enjoyed Marketing the most.

And here's why? 👇🏽

The Challenge

Every day you're focused on how to get someone's attention or even tougher how to encourage them to take an action.

This is tough because everyone has something going on in their lives and they're not sitting around waiting for my LinkedIn post (every weekday at 10 am 😉).

A lot of students and grads think they'll be good at marketing. I think that's because it's one of the few roles you can go into that you've already been exposed to since your parents brought you your first iPhone.

But try getting 100 people to do anything like comment or sign up to a newsletter.

Better yet try 50, once you get outside of your friends and family it gets challenging.

But we like a challenge.

Getting these reps in is the only real way to get good at Marketing. And btw, even doing a side project or a small email newsletter will look really good to someone hiring for a Marketing role.

The Variety

We probably shouldn't use the term 'Marketing' so much because it's an incredibly broad term.

There's Brand Marketing where you're promoting your organisation as a whole rather than any particular product or service. Airbnb in recent years has been massively focused on this. You might have seen some of their videos of people just having a great time on holiday.

And then there's Direct Response Marketing where you're trying to encourage someone to take an action, think YouTube ad with a button to sign up to something.

Not only are there loads of different routes within Marketing, it's also one of those industries that literally changes every day. There's new tools and strategies to learn and implement.

My brother does a great job of sharing updates every week on the latest trends (these are the things you should know for your interviews and when you're on the job) you can join his newsletter here.

The Results

Ahh how satisfying it is when you share a social media post and it really pops, get thank you DMs or see those sales or sign up numbers go up.

There's nothing like seeing the difference you actually made at work.

And another top tip. You want to come across as the type of person who is goal-orientated and motivated by these results. Remember that when you're in your next interview or having a catch up with your boss.

And of course, if you're looking for a Marketing position right now, check out this one with the Science Museum Group.
