Why I paid tribute to this man at my BNI meeting today.

We were marking the Independence Day at our BNI meeting today and the theme of the meeting was “Your Indian Role Model”.

This gentleman was the only name that popped in my head. Without us realizing it, he’s had a tremendous impact on our psyche as a nation. Who is he?

Let me just say, that if he was not there, we wouldn’t have had Sachin Tendulkar and the countless hours of thrilling entertainment. We won’t have been inspired to rise up as a cricketing superpower. We won't have had all those cricketers who got inspired by Sachin and made a mark on the sporting world.

He’s none other than Ramakant Achrekar - the revered Indian cricket coach, known for his exceptional ability to nurture and develop budding talent into world-class cricketers. From his humble beginnings to coaching cricketing legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Achrekar’s journey is not only a testament to his expertise in cricket but also serves as an inspiring model for leadership and mentorship in business coaching.

Achrekar created a holistic training environment where practice was emphasized as much as the mental and emotional aspects of the game. He was known for his unique drills, which often included innovative methods to enhance batting skills. His teachings also transcended cricket, imparting important life lessons about dedication, humility, and teamwork.

But why is HE my role model?

Because Business coaching, much like sports coaching, requires a deep understanding of individuals and their potential. Here are some key lessons from Ramakant Achrekar’s coaching philosophy that I try to apply in the realm of business coaching:

1. Identifying Potential: Achrekar had an uncanny ability to identify talent, often seeing promise in players who others overlooked. In business, effective coaches must also recognize potential in team members, allowing them to leverage their strengths and talents for collective success.

2. Individualized Attention: Achrekar was known for customizing his coaching approach based on each player's unique needs. Similarly, business coaches should ensure that they understand the personal and professional aspirations of their clients, offering tailored advice and support that meets their specific challenges.

3. Building Resilience: Achrekar emphasized the importance of resilience in the face of failure, a lesson readily applicable to the business world where setbacks are inevitable. Coaches can inspire clients to view failures as valuable learning opportunities, fostering a growth mindset.

4. Setting High Standards: Achrekar set high expectations for his players, motivating them to push their limits. In business coaching, establishing clear, high goals encourages individuals to strive for excellence and hold themselves accountable.

5. Creating a Supportive Environment: Achrekar fostered a sense of community among his students, where teamwork and mutual support thrived. Business coaches can mimic this by promoting collaboration and open communication within teams to nurture a positive and productive workplace culture.

6. Continuous Learning: Achrekar himself was always learning and adapting his methods. In today's rapidly changing business landscape, coaches should encourage ongoing education and adaptability, emphasizing that learning never stops.

7. Celebrating Successes: Just as Achrekar celebrated the achievements of his players, effective business coaches should recognize and celebrate the progress and victories of their clients, no matter how small. This builds confidence and encourages further growth.

As we reflect on Achrekar’s remarkable journey, it’s clear that true coaching and mentorship goes beyond merely imparting skills; it involves instilling values, nurturing talent, and building a legacy of excellence.

Business coaches like myself can draw inspiration from Achrekar’s principles to not only enhance individual performance but to develop teams that are equipped to thrive in an increasingly competitive world. Just as Achrekar shaped the future of Indian cricket, coaches can profoundly influence the trajectories of their clients’ careers and businesses.
