Why It's Crucial to Understand What's Working in Your Sales Technique

The world of sales is super dynamic and in this world, a one-size-fits-all approach is a myth. The one thing every successful salesperson knows is that, understanding what specifically works for them in the sales process forms the cornerstone of their success - this is also something every aspirational salesperson should learn. In this newsletter we’ll dive deep into the importance of recognizing the efficacy of your sales techniques. As we navigate through the following sections, you'll gain insights into self-assessment, leveraging your strengths, the critical role of feedback in your career and the benefits of utilizing technology.

Why Self-Assessment is Important

Self-assessment simply translates to holding up a mirror to yourself and your performance. This is something you should aim to do as often as you can. Regularly evaluating your performance and the strategies that are working for you helps in highlighting areas of strength and those that need development. Just like a sports player watches replays of their games, a salesperson should revisit their interactions, pitches, and prospecting techniques. This continuous reflection not only helps identify what is working in your sales process, but also what resonates with your target audience and can help pinpoint areas that might be hindering your potential. The result you can expect after self-assessment? A robust, refined, and efficient understanding of your sales strategy.

Identifying Your Strengths

Your strengths manifest over time to form your unique selling style, and in sales, knowing and harnessing these can be a game-changer. Whether it's your impeccable product knowledge, your ability to build genuine relationships, or your knack for delivering compelling pitches – recognizing these strengths allow you to take the necessary steps to capitalize them. Once you’ve identified them, your strengths need to be honed and integrated more prominently into your sales approach. For instance, if storytelling is your strength, you need to continuously practice & perfect it by embedding narratives into every interaction you have with prospects, this can lead to more engaged prospects and successful conversions.

In simple terms, identifying and honing your strengths allow you to amplify your effectiveness. Here are some tips to help you begin:

  • Break down your last wins: Look back at the times that you’ve been successful in securing a result; demos you’ve successfully booked, deals you've closed against all odds, prospects you’ve managed to convince to stay on the phone to hear you pitch (despite their initial reluctance to even accept your call). Within these you can identify common patterns or techniques you employed that contributed to those wins.
  • Ask Others about your strengths: Ask your manager and your colleagues for insights into what they think your biggest strengths are. This can sometimes surface attributes that you may not have been aware you possessed,
  • Action Embeds Habits: Once you have a clear idea of what your strengths are, consciously incorporate them into all your sales activities. By practicing them on a consistent basis, you develop them and embed them as unconscious habits.

Understanding and leveraging your strengths not only enhances your performance but builds confidence and differentiates you in a competitive market.

Understanding and Leveraging Success

Success leaves clues. Understanding why certain techniques work is the key to consistently replicating your successes. I can’t emphasise enough that it's essential to understand the 'WHY' behind a successful technique. It's not enough to know that something works in your method; you must understand the underlying principles that make that method work. Is it the language you use when presenting your pitch? Or maybe the way you handle objections thrown by prospects? By breaking down your successful strategies and figuring out the core elements that make them effective, you can create a playbook for future success, these successes can literally be transformed into templates or blueprints for similar scenarios, giving you a consistent and effective approach.

Let’s imagine (as above) that your storytelling approach really resonates with prospects, explore why that is. Is it the emotional connection, the clarity of the message, or the relevance of your solution to the prospect’s needs? Once you grasp the 'why,' you can leverage this understanding to execute your playbook. This process of understanding and leveraging success bridges the gap between random wins and consistent excellence.

It’s Important to Seek Feedback

Feedback can act as the compass that guides you towards effectiveness. Whether it's a satisfied customer praising your approach or your manager suggesting an improvement, getting feedback is one of the most valuable things you should seek. Actively seeking feedback and, more importantly, acting on it, can help you to refine your technique, making you more attuned to the needs and preferences of your prospective customers.

In sales, the landscape is ever-evolving. What worked yesterday might be obsolete today. Hence, the mantra for lasting success in sales is continuous improvement and adaptation. Regularly updating your knowledge, being open to new techniques, and having the agility to pivot when necessary are crucial. Here are some ways you can begin to foster this culture:

  • Schedule Regular Reviews: Regularly review your sales techniques and strategies to ensure they remain effective.
  • Experiment with New Approaches: Don't be afraid to try new methods or tools that align with emerging trends or your target prospects’ needs.
  • Learn from Mistakes: Failure is always an opportunity for learning. Analyze what didn't work and adjust your approach accordingly.
  • Embrace Change: Sales is dynamic. Embrace change and be willing to evolve your techniques to stay competitive.

By adopting a mindset of continuous improvement and adaptation, you position yourself as a proactive and resilient salesperson, capable of navigating any shifts in the landscape.

The Impact of Technology

We are firmly entrenched in the digital age, technology is revolutionizing the way we understand, manage and enhance our sales techniques. Tools like CRM systems with in-built analytics provide unprecedented insights into what's working and why; they can offer insights into customer preferences, behaviours, and histories of interaction, enabling you to tailor your techniques effectively; this is even more effective when the CRM you’re using is an AI-powered end to end platform like HubSpot . Leveraging technology can not only streamline the process of identifying successful techniques but also enable a data-driven approach that will enhance precision. By embracing the opportunities these technologies present, you open the door to join a new era of sales excellence, driven by data, innovation, and adaptability.

To wrap up, understanding what's working in your sales technique is not just beneficial—it's essential. It's the compass that guides you towards more meaningful interactions, successful conversions, and a rewarding career. By regularly assessing, seeking feedback, and leveraging both your strengths and technology, you position yourself for enduring success. So, take a moment today to reflect on your techniques and embark on the journey of continuous improvement.
